Real Talk From Naomi Cambell to Fashion Industry

Naomi Campbell

Naomi Campbell got downright cheeky with the fashion industry in response to what she sees as blatant racism, and a preference for blonde, blue-eyed wheffas, as opposed to certified chocolate bangers like herself:

“You know, the American president may be black, but as a black woman, I am still an exception in this business. I always have to work harder to be treated equally,” she said in a Glamour interview appearing on Monday (local time) in Germany.

She added: “In the past, there were more opportunities for black models but the trend towards blonde women has again become extreme. In magazines, on the catwalk, I see blonde, blue-eyed models everywhere.”

In 2007, London-born Campbell, along with fellow models Liya Kebede and Tyson Beckford, launched a campaign against what they said was discrimination in the fashion world.

How do you all feel about the fashion industry’s perceived racist tactics and more importantly, what can be done to curtail them?

    Get over it honey. If you got it racism wouldnt be an obstacle for you. Youve had a long run, longer than most models. Call it a day and find you a man… preferably one that dosnt belong to someone else.

  • Sawyer

    First off…maybe if you kept that attitude of yours in check you’d get more photo shots! Aint nobody tryna duck and dodge cell phones and whatever else you get your hands on cause you got issues. And second, chick you old! Be like Tyra, branch out into other stuff. She got the hint, why didnt you?!

  • Mannie

    AS LONG AS WHITE PEOPLE HAVE COMPLETE OWNERSHIP OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY, THEY WILL CONTINUE TO BROADCAST WHAT THEY CONSIDER TO BE BEAUTIFUL.

    DISPLAYING IT IN MAGAZINES, TELEVISION, BILLBOARDS ETC.

    I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT FASHION BUT, AS BLACKS WE ALWAYS ARGUE ABOUT WHAT WE ARE NOT GETTING, INSTEAD WE SHOULD BE FIGURING OUT HOW TO START ARE OWN BLACK OWNED FASHION AND MODELING COMPANIES.
    TARGETING TOWARDS PEOPLE OF ALL ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS.

    TYRA, NAOMI, TYSON, IMAN, THERE ARE A LOT OF FAMOUS BLACK MODELS THAT CAN TRY AND COME TOGETHER AND CREATE A LOT OF EXPOSURE FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR.

    THEY ARE WELL KNOWN ALL OVER THE WORLD BUT THEY DON’T THINK ABOUT DOING THIS, BECAUSE IF THEY WERE TO START SOMETHING THEY WILL MOST LIKELEY BE ABLE TO GET TONS AND TONS OF BUSINESS. THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO HAVE THE TALENT TO BECOME MODELS, BUT BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT BLOND HAIR BLUE EYES THEY GET OVER LOOKED
    OF COURSE THAT WILL HAPPEND BECAUSE IT IS WHITE OWNED.

    UNTIL THERE IS BLACK OWNERSHIP IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY, MODELS SHOULD ALWAYS KNOW THAT THEY WILL GET OVER LOOKED.

  • Symone

    She’s right! I don’t buy fashion magazines like Glamour and Vogue.

  • jb_1030 (is stepping up her purse game until she cleans out her closet of old shoes)

    Was she in teh BET catwalk show? Maybe she needs to start her own fashion line and use the models she wants to.

  • http://bossip bb

    Naomi MIGHT be beautiful but because she is BAD MANNERED and has a NARCISSISTIC PERSONALITY she is UNABLE to HOLD on to a man.

    I GIVE her another 2 years before her phone STOPS RINGING.

    WHAT will she do THEN?

  • crush

    there’s one new girl from philly with a future…but the rest of these black chicks ain’t bringin it

  • Just Sayin

    I love me some Naomi, tude and all…

  • Jay

    99% of white models wished they had this heifer’s career, wtf she talking about?

    And why C Brzy on trial and she walking around free with her serial assaulting self?

  • crush

    hence, naomi can’t retire no time soon

  • http://www.gravatar.com Re (Gambit in 25 Days!)

    Well Naomi, your struggles have made you a household name in the modeling industry. Not that anyone should have to go through what you went through, but still.

    Oh, and that picture above is beyond gorgeous…

  • Just Sayin

    I think she doin what she is supposed to do as a pioneer and that’s shine a light on the situation.

    It may make it a lil better for the next model to come along.

  • Just Sayin

    Was she in teh BET catwalk show? Maybe she needs to start her own fashion line and use the models she wants to.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    True dat…
  • crush
    the truth is naomi is a model and has the IT factor the others don’t
  • Just Sayin
    Connections can take you places where money don’t count, and that’s where you want to be.
    You gotta role in the circles where there are no tickets sold to the event, no posting on the internet, no radio air play, no barber shop hookups, no nail salon gossip about it.
    That’s where you’ll find the real power!
  • Huh? (new on here but not 2 b confused with the other 1)
    Naomi Campbell is so pretty (she could work on her personality though, lol) but she obviously has self-esteem issues I’m sure she has many casting people tell her she didn’t have the right looks or put her down because of her color. Also why in so many pictures is she lightened up. I’ve never seen a black & white photos make a black person lighter, lol, and also in the last photo on the bottom. I think part of her anger comes from low self-esteem because when you don’t love yourself how can you love someone else? Anyway I think she isn’t just talking about herself not getting work in modeling she is talking about other models who are being denied shows, magazines, etc.
  • http://bossip bb
    Naomi is going to be 39yrs this year.
    NO husband,NO children and here she is WHINGING about the MODELING INDUSTRY.
    WHY as she not SETTLED DOWN and STARTED her OWN BUISNESS by NOW.
    WILL she STILL BE WHINGING at 50yrs
    She often BEHAVES like an ANIMAL and her BAD REPUTATION as GONE before her.
    AND this might be one of the REASONS why OTHER young BLACK MODELS are not getting these JOBS.
    ITS not about SWAGGER ITS about ATTITUDE.
    NOBODY wants to WORK with an ANIMAL
  • Christie’s secrets (la vie serait plus belle si j’avais un job !!! grace a dieu tout ira bien tres bientot)
    here is the dark skinned woman that is BETTER looking than HALLE, BEYONCE LAUREN LONDON (sorry, I was just thinking about the other thread)
    Well, im kinda tired of her whining about racism! she was overpaid and is still working at almost 40 while some other models frends are not even getting jobs anymore. I think she has money, connections, power etc… to start an agency, encourage african american fashion deisgners etc…
    I mean Tyra is doing it, of course tyra wont change the fashion industry but she is trying! Maybe naomi should try or shut up and just enjoy her retirement! Plus Naomi is a hater, the way she treated tyra banks because she felt threatened, she never told herself, at least there is another black woman, she wanted to be the only one so she was part of the problem!
    Anyways, she is rich, she is still bangin, life is GOOD for her!
    I’m gonna go dig up some song to dedicate to Naomi.
    Naomi only dates white men, the Russian, Robert Deniro, U2′s the Edge.
  • fallon
    We should have more major black designers that pick black women for their runway shows and stop running up after white people for their acknowledgement.
    And now, from the bottom of my heart…a song I’d like to dedicate to Ms. Naomi “I’m still publicly flaunting my affair with some crusty married man” Campbell.
    Hoeeeeee (Hoe)
    You’s a Hoeee (Hoe)
    You’s a Hoe, I said that you’s a Hoe (Hoe)
    You’s a Hoe (Hoe)
    You’s a Hoe (Hoe)
    You’s a Hoe, I said that you’s a Hoe (Hoe)
    (cont’d)
  • anna
    she is speaking for not only herself, but other black models as well. Just because she’s making the most money, doesn’t mean other black models aren’t getting discriminated against.
    I cosign with fallon.
    Why is she whining about what they’re doing. Just do your own thing.
  • me (the original)
    Damn I can’t finish posting the rest of the song.
  • excuse me
    tyson beckford launched a complaint against the fashion world? LOL have you seen his show “make me a super model”? The contestants on that show are mostly white. And his baby momma is a caucasian girl, she’s on the show “candy girls”. If he’s so into discrimination, he could start with himself. Not that i care who he dates, that’s his choice, but why is it always the ones who are with white people who always scream discrimination ? I don’t get it. Either way i don’t feel sorry for naomi, lol i feel sorry for the folks she attecked with phones !!!
    ok sorry but what has naomi really done for the image of black models? She hasn’t acted responsbily, she hasn’t impacted the image of black women in a postitive light, infact all she has done is perpetuate the image of “a mad black woman”. Now all of a sudden she wants to cry about the lack of black models. Where was the love for tyra lol? She wanted tyra’s leg broken lol. She hated her. Now she cares about black models? Yeah right.
  • ok
    tyra is more legit, i take her more serously than naomi. tyra is doing good, while naomi is still partying and getting in trouble with the law. Screw naomi lmao.
    However Naomi is really not the kind of person that any SANE person will listen to.
    She has been in the INDUSTRY for the PAST 20YRS how as SHE HELPED other BLACK MODELS?.
    Her UNRULY,UNCIVILISED BEHAVIOR as well as her VARIOUS court APPEARANCES as MADE her a MOCKERY.
    She is still voicing the truth.
    deal with the truth by what she’s saying…..or shut the **** up!!!
    p.s.
    no model can stop any other model from doing their job…or the designer will fire them…he/she has the final word.
    Naomi has NEVER been fired from her assignments.
    She may be tempermental but she is always dutiful where work is concerned. FACT!!!
    @ jade
    skin bleaching is a common practice amoung women of many ethnicities, indian, chinese, black, etc. I saw a documentary on women in the caribbean who buy illegal skin bleach to lighten their skin, infact the men were doing it too. That’s crazy.
  • huh
    lmao that is the truth, it’s not hard work to be a model, it’s the easiest job in the world, you are born pretty and tall, all you have to do is remain skinny and get paid…but now a days being “controversial” helps too lol.
    the only hard work i can see them girls doing is networking! sometimes, i think they have to “seduce” designers to let them work, which is why given naomi’s personnality, you know they took her just cause she looks good not because she is sweet and delicious!
    @ jade
    Yes it’s extremely sad ! Not only are they harming their health by using illegal skin bleach, they are also putting out a message to young kids that thier dark skin is not beautiful and that only light skin is attractive. I don’t know what’s wrong with some folks now a days. I mean they live in the caribbean, it’s not like they are trying to compete with white people, so i just don’t get it. One of the young women said she bleachers her skin so she can land a good husband and one of the young men said that he wanted to marry a pretty girl and said the pretty girls only want light skinned men. Sad !
  • DDub
    Naomi is speaking up for black models period. She’s lasted longer than most white models. Her issue here is that blacks aren’t getting attention. Really that could be said for any race outside of whites. But to say racism didn’t exist because she made it big is beyond ridiculous. She by far the exception.
  • DDub
    Though the good news is the new J. Crew catalog has Liya Kebede in the first 30 pages. I guess as an acknowledgment that the first lady is making their profits soar.
  • huh
    ddub
    racism definitely exist regardless of what race you are or what occupation you have, it’s in the office, school, even working at burger king, racism is there. But when naomi tried to get other black models fired from their gigs, it’s kind of hard for me to sit here and feel bad for her. Now she cares about black models? Where was this awareness before ?
  • Jade Silver
    @ huh… In her youth it was all about her. She grew up and wants to give back and be remembered for doing some good. She’s about to bow out, she wants to make it easier for those coming to take her place. I think with her networks she is the best person actually to speak out about racism in the industry. It is so obvious it had to be said.
  • huh
    @ jade
    ummm just less than 2 years ago she was in court for beating up her assistant, she did not grow up, she’s very immature and i think she knows her career is coming to and end and needs something else to fill her time, i don’t think she’s really sincere about helping other black models, that’s just my opinion.
  • lmao
    @ohno
    who in their right mind would give naomi her own reality show, hmmm on second that that would be very entertaining ! you’d have to keep cell phones far away from her though ha !
  • TheGoodGood
    Shes forgetting she’s an employee, she should have elveraged her position into something huge that could actually effect change.
  • Mahogany
    You people are missing the point. naomi campbell is speaking up for upcoming models not herself. there has been a huge impediment for black women to become the next Naomi, etc. African americans spend more money on luxury goods than their white counterparts. I am a Marketing executive and I know the numbers and we are an integrated society so all this talk about starting our lines is important and valid. However we are a multicultural society and most blacks have assimilated in the larger culture where we buy mass produced brands. Consequently there should be more representation of blacks/ethnic models in high fashion ads because it comes down to dollars and cents. i bet if we all stop buying Gucci and Louis Vuitton out of protest. these designers would put more of us in the ads. It would make a huge difference.
  • Christie’s secrets (la vie serait plus belle si j’avais un job !!! grace a dieu tout ira bien tres bientot)
    capo,
    you know that when our people are on top, they forget about the cause… i mean just look at the controversy about ciroc! Maybe diddy was not the boss but it just means they never are really the one that decide! we dont have and i dont think we will ever have the power to decide except obama maybe!
  • Mahogany
    @Capo aka Harlems Finest
    They are black designers making moves, ie, Tracey Reese, Patrick Robinson, etc. I know fashion. the point is lets make our own but also the other established brands should be more inclusive of ethinc groups because it is a dollars and cents thing. it is not a whining thing. it is a fact that blacks make-up on of the largest purchasers of luxury goods and marketers leave money on the table by not marketing to us directly with black models.
  • http://bossip bb
    What does being the “BADDEST CHICK” in the modeling world have to DO with the PRICE OF RICE IN CHINA.
    This woman as been in the INDUSTRY for 20GOOD YEARS
    Last year it was reported that she had FINANCIAL PROBLEMS.
    In all that time she was not smart enough TO START HER OWN BUISNESS .
    She could have HELPED THESE black models by employing them.
    She could have STARTED her OWN modeling agency or fashion label with her CONTACTS.
    HER personal life is NOTHING to SHOUT about either
    SHE can’t KEEP a man AND I can HEAR her BIOLOGICAL CLOCK TICKING from over HERE.
    Its OBVIOUS that she is NOT particularly BRIGHT and HAS no BUISNESS ACUMEN or she would have STARTED some kind of BUISNESS 10 years AGO.
    LOOK at IMAN,BEVERLY JOHNSON,TYRA
    You have to MAKE HAY WHEN THE SUN SHINES.
    IN 10yrs Naomi will be REMEMBERED for her SIGNATURE WALK and her UNCIVILISED ATTITUDE will that BRING money to the TABLE when all her so called ASSETS have HEADED SOUTH
  • http://freekarma.net John Lennon
    I do not understand racism…every person brings a unique look and fills out an outfit perfectly. Why would a designer want just one type of person to wear their clothes? This is the 21st century!
  • c from stl
    @bb
    It has to do with the fact that she will be forever noted as an ICON to the fashion world. It has to do with the fact that maybe she didn’t start her own business or venture out into other things YET, but she has gone farther than any of the other models that did do so. Her image alone is still bankable and she’s almost 40, that’s geriatric in the modeling world. She will go down in history just like Twiggy and Christie Brinkley but she will have set the path for the black, darker-skinned model which says alot. My point is that regardless of her flaws (which we all have) this woman’s still killin’ it, with her body, her skin, and her essence; I’m sure she will eventually start up something else very soon once she retires from the catwalk…
    who cares that they only use white girls, Most sistas too thick for those designers anyway..support the black designers..
  • http://bossip bb
    @C from st
    That is just the POINT she as been in the industry for 20 good years and as not set any PATH.
    MLK set the PATH for President Obama that is what is KNOWN as SETTING PATHS.
    Twiggy and Christie Brinkly were NOT KNOWN for HITTING and SPITTING at people and VARIOUS COURT APPEARANCES .
  • ThatBKChick
    ^^^^^Thank You Adrienne!!! Well said!…I am a housing Commissioner here in the East Bay, and we are still paying for Katrina Victims and half of them are not even trying to get up and get a job or do something more with their lives. Black folks have to rise up…I am not saying that Obama is going to be the end all to our solutions…but there is no damned excuse now that the most powerful nation on this planet is lead by a Black Man, with a Powerful Black Woman behind him that is his equal. Michelle could had gone into politics and done her own thing…she is sitting back in the cut showing Black women and women of color…YES WE CAN!!! I am about being proactive and not reactive to garbage and bullish like Naomi’s and other folk who want to sit down and not stand up and be about handling our business as a people/human race!!!!
  • Amira
    Naomi is bad…I am an inspiring model and when I saw her at a fashion show…Hands down every one was in awe…her swag…her walk like no other in the industry…she is confident and mesmerizing…But I understand what she is saying regardless of her image in the media…I would love for someone to start a ethnic fashion modeling industry but Our own people, i.e. Sean Combs never hires black models for any of his products so we as a people really need to be focused and dedicated to the mission.
  • c from stl
    @bb
    Well, I respectfully disagree, but that’s perfectly ok. I do feel that Naomi has set the path for the darker skinned ethnic model. Sorry… Yes, Beverly Johnson and Iman were her predecessors, but they didn’t stick around…i.e. didn’t have longevity. Honestly, Naomi had no reason whatsoever to be jealous of Tyra because she’s a far better model and has maintained the look and stature to stay in the game. Her attitude and run-ins with the law have nothing to do with her ability to kill it in the fashion game. Yes she should have acted better, but she’s not in the game to be a role model. Setting the path doesn’t mean that you have to be a role model it just means that you worked hard and made it more acceptable for those after you to be signified as beautiful. During her heyday she was considered one of the top three supermodels besides Linda Evangelista and Kristy Turlington. No black model before her had that status.
  • Carla
    Naomi is a pretty woman but her attitude is stank, lol… Perhaps if she were to focus more on creating oppotunities for other models of color then beating up assisants, lol…. Naomi would be taking more seriously and not soley famous in the tabloids for excessive violence on a weekly basis. As for Giselle B. she is the uglist Brazilian chick I’ve ever seen, she looks like a tranny that’s why Tom Brady likes her she’s a bit manly and I want Bridget (Tom’s baby’s momma) to wait for Giselle in the bushes and jump her tall skinny ass, lol… Tyson’s a douche bag and I feel sorry for his ex-girlfriend and her young son, :(
    How many DARK SKINNED ETHNIC models can you NAME?
    Besides the 39yr OLD Naomi Campbell
    Those are just a couple off the top of my head…
    That brings further validation to what she said though…
  • Adrienne
    @ThatBKChick
    I’m with u on what you said. That is something I am doing differently in my life this year…being proactive. Eff being put on or hooked up.
  • Hmmm
    Capo
    Your right Aleck wack is sooooooo ugly why is she a model?
  • Adrienne
    Alek Wek is beautiful. Her skin in amazing. But I guess if she had a slimmer nose, was a little lighter and had short hair with a good curl she’d be cute to others……Yep, the media sure is doing their job….lol
  • http://bossip bb
    @C from stl
    The FACT that there are LESS black MODELS in the INDUSTRY than there SHOULD be is not in DISPUTE.
    Why is Naomi WHINGING about it when in the 20years in the industry she as DONE NOTHING to RECTIFY the SITUATION.
    She is NOT NEW TO THIS INDUSTRY.
    There a NUMBER OF BLACK DESIGNERS all over the world that she COULD work with.
    The JEWS help one another why shouldn’t black people WORK together in BUISNESS.
    She should stop the WAILING she HAD the PERFECT opportunity to MAKE A DIFFERENCE
    Sometimes the question is not necessarily how much she did for the industry, but how well she did in the industry. She’s done better than any other model…sorry…and in terms of tv shows, yes Tyra is attempting to change the fashion world with ANTM but most of those chicks don’t go too far in fashion and Tyra is capitalizing off her past career that she’s too fat for now. Tyra is trying to get stacks, period. Maybe Naomi really had a deep love for the fashion industry to stay in it and remain that beautiful palette. I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase ‘If you aren’t good at it, then teach it’…well there’s a similar phrase in the fashion world and when I was younger and modeling very heavily, all the has-beens were the ones running the agencies and booking the models… My point is there’s a perspective on everything and maybe Naomi didn’t set out to do the same thing as Tyra, Tyson, Iman, Heidi, etc.
    @ capo,
    i really disagree with you! those lists are bogus! try to do a list with chicks you actually know, those Are the sexiest women you can actually have so focus on them…
    plus i will put iman first,
    lauryn hill, pam grier, beverly johnson, etc…
  • Christie’s secrets (la vie serait plus belle si j’avais un job !!! grace a dieu tout ira bien tres bientot)
    @ c from stl,
    you can underestimate th epower of her attitude for other chicks! i mean discrimination comes with stereotypes! ALWAYS!And naomi’s attitude is NOT helping at all! I
  • c from stl
    @Christie’s Secrets
    You make a valid point but I feel like if she’s still in high demand and getting paid top dollar, then why should she leave? Alot of these other models stop getting booked and told that they aren’t as high in demand anymore. That’s when they start looking for other stuff to do. I can remember not long before Tyra decided to quit modeling for good, I paged through a Victoria’s secret catalogue and only saw maybe one or two shots of her from the waist up in a very boring standard bra. However, there were still pics of ‘older’ Naomi in the front feature section with the likes of Adrianna Lima, Giselle, and Selita Ebanks…I’m just sayin’….
    well i dont think akon is uglier than a jay-z or even a 50 cent! he is just darker but i think he actually look good! why are you always using akon as an example? is it the only african man you know? Have you ever been to Africa?? Becasue they don’t all look alike you know!
    About Alek, being a model because it seems like yu dont understand that is not about being pretty! A model has to stand out form the rest of the crowd! It could be for her beauty, yes, lots of models are gorgeous women but others are just different and look weird! Alek is different! Have you seen some of her ads! I mean you might find her ugly but just look at her and tell me you can come across chicks like that every day? you know you cant! You can find the like of lauren london, even beyonce everywhere! they are beautiful but nothing striking about their beauty!its average! i THINK ALEK WEK IS BEAUTIFUL! HER BODY IS LEAN AND CURVY, HER SKIN IS PURE AND FLAWLESS, SHE HAS SHORT HAIR AND IS VERY CONFIDENT! THE DAY YOU ‘LL SEE ALL THOSE WOMEN YOU NAMED WITHOUT WEAVE LET ME KNOW!
    How WELL she did is NOT the TOPIC UNDER DISCUSSION.
    I Personally believe that a TRUELY SUCESSFUL WOMAN is one that can balance HER personal life with her profession.
    This WOMAN as not been able to do this and to TOP it all she has a very BAD REPUTATION.
    The FACT is Naomi CANNOT model FOREVER it is a little SHORTSIGHTED NOT to PLAN for the FUTURE.
    Having a SWAGGER is not always ALL THAT ITS CUT OUT TO BE.
    I guess SHE could always try and get as much money as possible off the RUSSIAN BILLIONAIRE while he is STILL INTERESTED
  • Lois Lane
    Naomi has been modeling for almost 25 years and NOW she wants to complain about how hard it is for black models?!? Puh-leeze. She’s only complaining now because her modeling gigs are drying up. There’s not much she can do about changing the industry now…at the sunset of her career. The time for doing that was when she was on top and had more power. Instead of throwing a fit because other black models were in the same shows she was in, she could have demanded that the designers get MORE black models by refusing to participate in the shows until they did! She could have demanded that Vogue use more black models — or she would boycott! She did none of this…nothing!
    Naomi is the only supermodel who has not branched out into another business like modeling agencies, clothing lines, cosmetic companies, etc. She was too busy hanging out in nightclubs and chasing after old white men, trying to get them to marry her. And she is the ONLY supermodel who never got a contract with a cosmetics company or perfume maker (because of her stank attitude). All her comtemporaries are married with children AND their own businesses. What does she have? Nothing!
    At least Tyra is trying to help black models get started in their careers, because she said she knows the discrimination they face.
    Naomi is a perfect example of a person who is beautiful on the outside but ugly on the inside. She treats her assistants, maids, etc. HORRIBLY. What kind of person throws phones at other adults, hitting them in the head and drawing blood?! Naomi must be miserable inside.
    You reap what you sow, Naomi. So far, you have reaped much more than you deserve. So sit down and STFU!!
  • Ara
    @ Amira
    Naomi IS bad, on the catwalk …….. poetry in motion
  • Carla
    I personally believe that the modeling industry is a board room of insecure men and women who select the models they find attractive (some of those model look like shit, I’ve seen better looking people waling down the street, lol). This secret chair man and women of the board set the trend and models who have a certain “look”. I wouldn’t want to be a run way model, I enjoy eating, lol and no I am not fat, lol…. :)
  • Naomi.Is.Fierce
    @ Lois Lane, i agree, but during the high points of her career, it was a written rule that there could only be 1 black top model and she was determined that it would be soley her. She let that go to her head and when Tyra came along, she used her power in the wrong way and sabatoged Tyra’s career. and the press didn’t help. I think she could/should have did more.
    @ ADRIENNE
    This is a blog. It is stupid to become furious over someone elses comments. Racism exist everywhere. The NBA, NFL, modeling TV, Films, etc. I hate racism. I am not downplaying the situation. It is a never ending battle. Naomi is one of the highest paid models in the industry. If she wants to make a positive change she should start devising a plan to do so, gracefully and with tact. Shooting off at the mouth to Glamour magazine will not resolve issues. It is unpleasant. Naomi is not the first black person to be discriminated against. I have been targeted for racism as well as so many others. There is a time and place for everything.
    Glamour magazine was not the forum to air out the dirty laundry that we already knows exists in the fashion industry.
    Your attitude is very disgusting. People can disagree without all of the venom and name calling. your really not worth my time responding to but I just wanted to acknowledge your derrogatory comments. Usually I don’t like to waste my time with imbecilles such as yourself.
  • Don’t Get It
  • Adrienne
    @ Treasure.
    Well if USUALLY you don’t waste your time then don’t start doing things differently on my behalf. Good day
  • black
    even though she has had a good career, its more about the up and coming black models that just cant seem to get that break and be a force in the industry. Fashion has made being black a fad; it comes and goes, but we as people are not going anywhere (at least i hope). The only reason people like sesslie lopez and the pena girl (forgot her first name) are on the radar is because of our president. once it fades away, unfortunately we may fade again away from the runways
  • hhh
    Just been reading some of the comments. Alek Wek is not a model because she is ‘pretty.’ Alek Wek is one of the most famous supermodels because she is STUNNING! She is unique looking and one of a kind. She’s the type of woman that if you saw down the street you would HAVE to look at. That’s what designers want, not run of the mill Lauren London’s who are a dime a dozen.
  • copelli21
    Naomi is absolutely right. And despite peoples feelings about her personally, this has been an issue she has addressed in the past.
    Bethanne Hardison has held numerous forums over the years about this and Naomi HAS been apart of them and active in voicing her dissent about racism in fashion.
    And as one of the few black models with any type of longevity, she is certainly in a position to know this first hand.
    Give the woman some credit. She’s speaking out on what needs to be said, because in spite of it being 2009, there are less black models on the catwalks than ever, while the population of this planet is general is browning.
  • TAMMY
    WE AS BLACKS NEED TO HAVE OUR OWN SHOWS AND LEARN TO MARKET OUR FASHION TO YOUNG PEOPLE AT LOW COST AND AT LOWER LEVELS IN THE SOCIETY . BECAUSE I KNOW THERE ARE BLACK DESIGNERS , BUT WHERE I AM I CANNOT GET ACCESS TO THEIR CLOTHING. WE NEED TO NUTURE AND MARKET OUR OWN AND STOP DEPENDING ON OTHERS TO INCLUDE US. LOVE NAOMI, SHE IS BEAUTIFUL… WE NEED TO SEEK SOLUTIONS,BECAUSE WE ALREADY KNOW THE PROBLEMS
  • lkjk
    ok this is really sad, you all sound ignorant and misinformed. So she has been in the business for a long time, so what, that doesn’t mean it suddenly got easier for her to speak her mind, she is still a minority and the fashion world is fickle, why at 23 would she challenge an industry decades old, if not hundreds of years old since fashion has been around forever. You all seem to forget that fashion is fickle, and no matter what color and/or nationality you are you have to fight for your spot at every single fashion show that comes up at every single fashion week. Black models normally have only one opening to walk. Of course they are going to be defensive, maybe cause a few cat-fights, they worked hard to wiggle themselves into that “One Only” spot and will “be damned” if some new-be comes and takes it. Naomi isn’t contesting that she is a mean person or has been in the fashion business for a long time, she is stating that there are not enough black models and despite that fact that she has as a black model made millions of dollars meaning attractiveness always sells no matter what color, the fashion industry seems like it wont budge on it’s “One Black Only Policy”. What has she done?, a lot of you keep ignorantly asking, sorry but by just being there and maintaining that top spot she has done ALOT, more then her fair share. So what Tyra has a show and branched off into something else, she retired from modeling and can now do whatever she wants, we all know that AMNT has not catapulted ANY of there black female winners into the international supermodel status that she herself has attained. In-fact you could even say that Tyra is hurting them, picking them as winner only to have them sitting and waiting for assignments that they won’t ever get because they are black.
