Michelle Obama and her mother, Marian Robinson grace the cover of Essence Magazine’s May issue. For parents who don’t have a clue (and you know who you are), you may want to cop this issue – they’ll be talking about raising “smart, confident kids” and what not. Check the flipside for a glimpse of the spread.

    Cant wait to buy it.

  • Illy

President Obama did call Mrs. Marian Robinson one of the unsung heroes of his campaign. Thank you for your sacrifices Mrs. Robinson.

  • AKeysFan1981

I’m going to pick this issue up. Essence seems to have the same people on rotation for the covers: Halle, Beyonce, Tyler, I may have missed a few others. Somebody help me out.

  • The Grundle

Way too much foundation makeup. This is 2009, be proud of your black skin ladies.

  • http://signoftimes@msn.org mild sauce part of the sauce family tradition ™

Beautiful strong black woman .. Shout out to all of you!!!

  • Detroiter4Life

OMG…….jb_1030! I thought it was me…….;p I was wondering why Michelle looked so light!? She’s a beautiful sista and her complexion does not need to be touched! That’s a trip…….other than that it’s nice picture of them together.

For the record and the looney bashers this is nothing against dark or light skin sistas!

  • Just plain ole Swag-

There is no relationship in a family more important than mother and child – Michelle Obama

This woman is so wise!! America (Especially Black America) needs to re-focus on the family and the children!! So many people now are worried about how big their house is, what kind of car they drive, how their child is in more activities than someone else’s child, how they are rearing their child to be more succesful than your child, etc.

They forget about the BOND a child needs to handle the pressures of society and success….

So your child won’t end up like so many in Hollywood successful but un-happy or successful but an embarrassment to themselves and their families…

  • http://www.k.com noelle

Oh yeah, my moms copy came yesterday

  • TbeenITsince87

Wooow Im really shocked and appalled to read all these negative comments! I was really expecting to see uplift and encouragement… Talk about crabs in a bucket

First lady and First grandmommy look beautiful, period.

  • Just Because

Why must Black people be so harsh on black women?
Black Women get no love from each other, the black community or Black men.

SMDH- Would everyone be happier if Michelle looked/acted like Kim Kardashian?

  • Glok9n: The real glok !!!

GIVE IT UP ..FOR TWO POSITIVE STRONG AND HISTORIC BLK WOMEN ,IM VERY PROUD TO BE BLK .. FUK BEING AMERICAN!!!

  • that one girl

She’s the reason why I LOVE being a black, smart women. They look lovely!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m going 2 def by this 4 me and my mom.

  • FLAWDA

Seriously, how many times are they gonna put the Obamas on Essence magazine. There are more than 2 black people in the world you know

  • http://bossip bb

WHY is it SO difficult for SOME to FOCUS on ACHIEVEMENTS rather THAN the TRIVIAL MATTER of APPEARANCE.

This is a PROUD MOTHER/DAUGHTER MOMENT showing that all the HARDWORK the mother INVESTED in her daughter by RAISING her properly as FINALLY PAID OFF.

HOW many MOTHERS can SAY that their DAUGHTER is the FIRST LADY of the U.S.A

YET AGAIN the POINT was MISSED and the FOCUS was BASED on APPEARANCE.

WELL at least this WOMAN as RAISED her DAUGHTER to be the BEST THAT SHE CAN BE.

  • Queeney

Definitely going to grab a copy, not just because the pictures is beautiful, but but because the information is credible, warranted and useful. Merci Madame Mitchelle!

  • pm

I just think she should chill on all the magazine covers… whats next King, Blacktail,

  • Nunya Beewaz

Question for that one gir1- why does your hairline start WAY back there behind your ears!

Seriously step away from the chemicals and let God commence to grow that back.

  • chaka1

    Loves it

  • Nunya Beewaz

@ Mel- if you are talking about Beyonce and Her Mom then you are YEARS too late. Also Essence/Ebony/Jet have all featured lots of Celebs and Prominient Business People with their parents so in no way would anyone be considered Swagger Jacking if it happens again.

  • hey

hey did you guys know michelle’s brother is married to a white woman, just thought i’d throw that in there…lol don’t know why im posting this though.

  • POP & LOCK ( the real one)

I love you MRS. OBAMA but please stop with the belts on EVERYTHING!

It really is sad to me I dont understand…Its like okay enough is enough if u have a preference of a certain skin type thats beautiful to u but u dont have to be so trivial and put down things that don’t fit in your box!

  • SOMER

#1 start to raising cofident & smart kids is to start making a better effect in choosing who you have children with. It’s hard for a kid to be confident when their daddy is no where to be found.

  • J

I wonder if she is going to tell people that her daughters’ role model is Beyonce. LOL, SMDH.

Those Knowles are evil liars, period. Michelle NEVER said that shiz!

And The swagger jacker’s Mom knows NOTHING about raising smart confident kids, btw. Hers are screaming for attetnion and acceptance and adulation from strangers, are drop outs, inarticulate….naw, don’t nobody want to hear about the Knowles parenting tips…..

  • Lady J

I love them both….Now these are what you call She-ro’s!!

  • Just Because

The comments in this thread are so upsetting. Why not uplift and support positive examples of blackness around education, being married before having kids, staying faithful within a marriage, mentoring others in the community, SIGH.

  • eveinthegarden

Love it…I’ll buy about 5 copies.

  • WordtotheWise

@TbeenITsince87>>>you are? I’m not. It’s quite typical of some black people who probably live less stellar lives to hate on someone doing something. Either way, Michelle is the bomb and regardless of the negative comments from resident losers, her man and kids love her and I’m sure she loves herself, so to the ones that don’t, too bad.

  • CattyBitch

@pm: I agree she needs to calm down with the magazine covers. First she’s on O magazine, then People, now Essence. It’s starting to look like she cares more about celebrity status than representing our country. And could they possibly have airbrushed her and her mother any lighter? They must have used Beyonce’s retoucher.

  • TheGoodGood

pretty ladies, she’s a good mother

  • TheGoodGood

is that the same outfit as on oprah’smagazine? she’s worn this somewhere before

  • pm

@Just Because…How can black people complain about Obama endorsed goods like comic books and 44 edition crown royal and other stuff when you are ok with slapping their family on every magazine cover like they got an album out or something. It just another way for the media to make the first black family look like entertainers and not a real political family. That’s all im saying. What’s next Sasha and Malia on the Just for Me box

  • Lady Next Door

    I will buy it. :)

    ****************************************************

If you are talking about who I think (Beyonce and Tina Knowles), I’ll say that gal will never live to dream about being in the same status as Michelle Obama and Marian Robinson.

  • Saffi

Even ESSENCE believes that lighter is better!!! What a shame!

  • Just Because

@PM- you tried to sound intelligent but you missed the mark. Black people do have the right to complain about RACIST STEREOTYPES associated with the OBAMA’s because all the other Presidents and their WIVES and their FAMILIES have ALWAYS appeared on MAGAZINE COVERS but never in a DEGRADING FASHION. That means that enlightened people of color have and will continue to have every right when the Obamas are associated with and depicted as: people who LOVE chicken, watermelon or monkeys.
Please use follow the same advice I gave to your ignorant co-signer above because you are beyond your level when you used utter and complete ignorance to try to make a point.

  • Niasia

I just want to make sure I understand the tone of some /a lot of the posts on here. So it is ok to have “Rock Stars” on every cover and over-exsposed but not the first family? A family regardless of race who show a human spirit and love and humility. We as a society would rather see actors/singers/dancers every where and not say a former lawyer and now Firstlady or President? You people kill me. I guess we should stick to showing our kids athletes, actors, entertainers as the way to go! No need to show them what an education and hard work can do. Just shove the bling and lewdness that is hollywierd at them and brain wash them into believing they too can be the next Beyonce or Lebron James!

  • Just Sit and Be Pretty

The sheer ignorance of some of you posters never ceases to amaze me. With the great role model that the First Lady is, and considering what she represents, instead of sitting bashing how many covers she’s appeared on and what shade of black she is on the magazine, aspire to higher thinking you idiotic gutter snipes!!

  • pm

@Just Because, we can disagree without the insults can’t we. I just would prefer president and his wife off the cover of OK , Star, GQ, Esquire. It will hurt them ar reelection time

  • blkbandit

Michelle is a very handsome woman.

  • me (the original) RichardBibs GTFO and no one gives a damn about millionaires club/chat.com!!!

Now, usually I’m the one shouting wherever I can be heard about people not treating the Obamas as they should be treated and treating them as celebrities, HOWEVER..I do feel this particular article is different.

Here she’s not discussing her personal life with Barack, posing or giving fashion advice, she’s talking about issues that are important to [not just Black/Hispanic but in general] Americans. Family values. Marriage, raising children. These are focal points that a First Lady should address and has addressed in the past. (Laura Bush, who, despite marrying a douchebag is a stand up woman)

Now, Michelle on the cover of Vogue, Cosmo, OK, etc, etc…yeah, that’s getting away from it all, because she’s not supposed to be a “fashion plate” but she should be an example of American values, virtues and ideals. Bravo, Essence! I do support this and will be picking it up.

  • Mrs. A

Michelle’s dress is from Talbots. That argyle sweater she wore in the UK was from Junya Watanabe, valued at $800. The JCrew sweater was $298.

  • Just plain ole Swag-

    @Niasia and JSABP

    100% agree!!!!!

  • GA by way of CA

and we wonder why other races don’t bother dealing with us? who cares if the first lady and her mother are airbrushed???

the fact that we have a powerful black couple in office is to be commended.

  • Kigali (I Love Stay-at-Home Wife/Mothers)

    @pm,

I agree. I see sassy black woman written all over Michelle face and it aint cute. And it isnt a good example for black women.

  • Just plain ole Swag-

    Kigali (I Love Stay-at-Home Wife/Mothers) LMAO!!

B*tch you just lazy…get yo lazy a$$ off welfare and get a job!!!

  • Kigali (I Love Stay-at-Home Wife/Mothers)

But for Michelle to talk about strong families in the black community is going to be hard. I believe being black and married is illegal in Texas. Ask Ms. Badu.

  • Just plain ole Swag-

Kigali really you need to stay in your lane when talking about your First Lady….her “sass” got her the most powerful man in the country?

    What does your man do?

  • pm

@kigali lol.. now you know I didn’t say nothing about her being sassy..I already know where you going with this one..lol you like being attacked.

  • Niasia

    @ Kigali

Man just shut up! You sound stupid. Please please tell me what about Michelle is not a good example for black women? I as a black woman think she is great and a wonderful role model! And if she were sassy what is wrong with that? You just like to throw out incendiary remarks in order to get a reply and I just fell for it…grrrr!

  • I’m just saying………………….

I hope some of you parents pick up a magazine, a book, and article or something to help you learn how to raise your kids. I work in the schools and some of you are turning out some bad children. Raising kids is more than just feeding them and clothing them. Its talking to them, teaching them right from wrong, (first YOU have to know right from wrong). If you get upset by this statement, it is probably you!

  • Mrs.North-Philly

she got it from her mama. :)

  • Just Sit and Be Pretty

Kigali, I think you’re a tad bit “girl interrupted”!! Guess it takes all kinds… *shrugging*.

  • me (the original) RichardBibbs GTFO and no one gives a damn about millionaires club/chat.com!!!

    @Kigali,

One day, you will get out in the world and realize that the hood rats and ghetto thugs that are constantly shown to subconsciously perpetuate the idea that Blacks are “less than” are only a part (not the majority) of Black Women and Men. There are plenty of Black Women out there who are giving their all, trying to do the right thing.

I’m sorry you don’t know any. They do, however, exist.

  • lanette

    I love that cover.

The way newspapers and magazines are folding I wouldn’t be mad at the Obamas on every cover.

But that skin lightening is too much, they look like funeral home makeup.

  • http://ringtones-lyrics.com Alex

These ladies are setting a whole new standard for American First Families. It’s a family that makes you proud, regardless of your politics.

    Rap Beats

  • bianca

    @ Kigali
You have nothing bad to say about Mrs.Obama…all you can say is she is sassy…Exposing your lameness to the max.
Hate is eating away your mind like cancer!
Seriously you need Jesus Christ in your life!It would take divine intervention to erase your bitter thoughts against black females

  • Toni

I thought this post would evoke a good conversation on rearing children. Afterall, that is why Michelle and her mother are on the cover. I guess it is too much to discuss how Michelle went to college after graduating high school, then later went to grad school, got married and later had children. I guess that is to much to wrap around your brains since most black women barely make it out of high school without getting pregnant, then later may have another child out of wedlock. Then have the nerve to call the fathers deadbeat dads when they didn’t ask are discuss with you to start a family. Respect your bodies, expect to be a wife, a respectable woman. Use birth control until you are married. Then discuss having children with a man that loves you, PLEASE!

  • toodles

Ughh Michelles frickin eyebrows are killin me!!!! Why are they like triangles !!!! ugghhhhh
