Some people refer to people who are no longer on the front lines as, Sell-outs. We here at Bossip were wondering what your thoughts are on people that once were militant or in the game, now being iconic figures in mainstream media?

A perfect example is Ice Cube who was once more militant than most of you youngsters can imagine. Cube  has since made numerous provocative films, and most recently, a few in the children’s genre.

Here, peep Cube’s old song, Enemy.

Thoughts?

  • glok9iswack

I don’t consider him a sellout either. Now that he has money he has more options and he’s expanding. Nothing wrong with self growth.

  • Keedie

    Cube, you the man!

He’s funny and multi-dimensional.. but don’t get it twisted, Ice Cube is pro-black and balck peopl eunderstand his point of view whether it’s funny or gangster.. he’s an icon in the community and he’s down for anything black. he’s an activist and he always speaks the truth..I love ice cube and I’ll support everything he does as long as he keeps putting anything out.

  • STRANGE PROGRAM

He grew up and he gained maturity. As is should be.

  • STRANGE PROGRAM

Or should have said, As IT should be.

  • RAY J

Sure you can when you were never a gangster and you are a college graduate.

  • Just plain ole Swag-

    Success is not selling out!!

Selling out is denying your roots(Tiger?), changing religions(Will & Jada??), Bleaching your skin for more than even tone (MJ, Lil Kim??), Wishing you were latina(Sasha un-Fierce??)

But not one of these people are sell outs because of their success, they just don’t want to be associated with African American coulture….

Ice Cube, Oprah, Spike Lee and The Obamas (and a lot of others)know how to balance it. They can be successful while black (whoops…did I just say that?!?)

  • Lush_Us_Lipps

Yes U can go from Gangsta to Icon…It’s called growing up, becoming mature, being a “real” man!

  • What the..

    that’s called growing up

the real sellouts are the guys who look down on guys like Cube, that preach about peace and anti violence but got hella child support bills and get arrested for dumb ish…

guys like Cube at least acknowledge there was room for improvement. What about guys who think cause their NOT thugs, feel they don’t need to grow?

  • http://Bossip Tee

No, he’s not a sellout. He changed, he grew up, he has a family. What we should be talking about is the 30 and 40 year old men still calling themselves “gansters and thugs”. Sit down! Cube is just an example of knowing when to hold’em and fold em!

  • gat

damn…that song talks about white people “extensively”

  • Sawyer

Ice Cube wasnt never no real gangsta, so the answer is yes!

  • Jw Dilla

I think it’s unfortunate that people don’t show a brotha love when he becomes successful. He has managed to do things largely on his own terms, and still manages to stir controversy in the media over his personal opinions.

  • jb_1030 (Cougar Shoenista in the making)

Cube has not changed who he is. He just grew up. So I cosign with all the other posts.

  • When you know better, you do better.

I definitely concur. Very well written.

  • Scheme1181

Look everyone grows up I loved Cube then and I love Cube now why is it that when blacks become successful other blacks always gotta remind them of how they use to be like they wanna hold em back and for what…Cube growning up and doing big things speaks alot louder then you think it shows kids that there are other ways and their dreams may come tru but the only thing holding them back is the people that gotta remind em of how they used to be sort of like this post

  • Detroiter4Life

Just plain ole swag…………GOOD point! well said……….

  • Oh F@ck THAT!!!

I think he is a great roll modle for all of those over 35 negros still saggin’ their pants and carrying around a illiterate dictionary full of excuses as to why they’ll never change when the answer is just that they don’t believe in their own potential SMDH!!!

If you are 30 years old or more, there are no excuses!!! Get’cha game up PLAYA!!!

  • Oh F@ck THAT!!!

  • The Grundle

The dude went from “Gangsta, Gangsta” to “Are We There Yet?” I’m not mad at him for getting paid and all, but shit, as far as rap goes, dude hasn’t put out a good album since the Public Enemy produced LP, “The Predator.”

Not mad at you Cube, just that you lost all street cred when you moved into the gated community.

  • always knew

    @one last hurrah-

Everything that you said is true, but you never SAW Oshea going to jail or caught up in ANY drama for that matter…I dig, what you said abut role model for people that still sga their pants. But I owuld say that every generation has their’ James Dean- rebelous moments’, our happened to be gangster rap. I think by example that he has shown as a father, entertainer and a blk man that you can do whatever you put your mind too, and accomplish whatever yu want, without limiting yourself, just because your background is/ isn’t the greatest.

I do understand where you’re going with this, but I’m glad that there are still some blk men who live their lives without apologizing for who they are. That’s what made Ice Cube, so successful. His perserverance, determination and belief in himself. Yeah, I would think that that’s a pretty good role model- (although if you need a role model at 35, your messed up), but Cube has NEVER done ANY TIME or DONE ANYTHING TO EMBARRASS HIMSELF. Sorry you don’t lke him, but that’s just the way it is….
    :)

I think that he cares more about his bank account than street cred. Anyone with half a brain, knows this and would not HESITATE to move into the gated community…. Just saying… :)

  • me (the original) RichardBibs GTFO and no one gives a damn about millionaires club/chat.com!!!

We all grow old, and as we do, thoughts and philosophies change. Cube is no different.

The only way to acquire wisdom is through age and experience. Don’t hate on Cube.

  • SO WHAT!!!

he grew the hell up is what happened!!!

  • DDub

You’ll be hard pressed to find anyone calling Cube a sellout. If anything he’s a role model. An example of learning and growing and adapting and prospering. He followed his heart. He spoke his mind and stayed true to himself. That’s what a real man does.
Thuggin’ last only for so long. Those trapped in the streets, if given enough time and exposure would eventually follow the same route. If anything we need to encourage more of this.

  • Candid Canuck

Cube is a bidness man.. that’s it that’s all..

  • W-2/401k Killer…

HE GETZ TOO MUCH RESPECT IN THE RAPP COMMUNITY AND AMONGEST HIS PEERS TO BE CALLED A SALEOUT…

  • W-2/401k Killer…

    @BDOT WELL SAID…HOMIE

  • Lady Next Door

Ice cube has always been a black king; he just so happens he had a rough life and he grew from it. That is to be respected. He is no sellout.

  • mel

helloooo….malcom little pimp/hustler turned el-hajj el shabazz nation of islam turned malcom x public speaker/ HUMAN rights activists….see how he’s grown as a man. now why can’t ice cube do the same???

  • fat boy

    most rappers are fake gangsters…..

back then he was juz talkin hard to sell records.

  • quietstorm372

Leave cube alone, all gangsters are downlow brothers anyway, mad because they daddy left, didn’t receive enough carnation milk, get institutionalized and start loving men. Gangsters ha ha what a joke. cube was never a gangster, just a business man who raised his game and level thinking. so save yourselves and stop waiting for someone to save you.

  • http://mockrockstar.ning.com Mock Rock Star

He grew up and left the hood

  • Mr. Cool

Young Peeps- please take notes. Ice created his escape key out of poverty into the land of opportunity. Big Ups to Ice Cube!

  • c from stl

Ice Cube said it himself: ‘All gangsters ultimately want to do is settle down with the wife and kids with the white picket fence living the good life…’ Sure, he had the rap hustle going back in the day, but the difference between Cube and many others is that he had a vision and saw PAST the bullish. He did what he did in the rap game and he is still very much respected in that industry, however there’s nothing wrong with maturing, making money and taking care of your family. He’s been with his wife for an extremely long time and they have a strong family. You never heard about Cube getting in trouble or getting caught up with these h0es. He’s smart and many a man should take notes from him…

  • c from stl

    @one_last_hurrah

You are speaking the truth! CHUUUUURRRCHHH!!!!

  • WESTCOASTLOVE

HES THE TRUTH ALWAYS HAS BEEN AND ALWAYS WILL BE ~PERIOD ! WESTCOOOOOAST ~LOL ~ ICE CUBE DEFINATELY IS ONE WHO CAN SIT UP AND AROUND OUR GREAT LEADERS AND KNOW THAT HE IS JUST AS GREAT HES BEEN SPITTIN THE TRUTH ABOUT LIFE FOREVER , EVEN IF SOME OF YALL COULDNT RELATE THEN OR NOW ~ hhHHmmmmmmnNNnNNNnNnN WESTCOOOOASTLOVE

  • Poor Babies

Sell or no Sell out, the brotha is fine as all get out.

  • G

Why would he be a sell out!?! He went through a certain part of his life. He’s now successful and should use his success to encourage our black men. Show how a successful black man can do good things. He’s out of his phase of immaturity. If selling out is growing up, becoming a man, and learning to do something positive w/ your life. Then not only is he a sell out, but I am also. I’m glad he has gone a positive route. I use to listen to all his stuff back in the day. I was just as ignorant as he. But when I was a child a spake as a child and acted like one. Now I’m a grown man and I act as such.

  • shaunie

Ice Cube matured and thats all there is to it.

  • krissy

Everybody has a past, good or bad…it just so happens that his was bad, but consider where he grew up and where he is now…he’s a father and husband so alot has changed over the years…I respect that he has come so far and is improving himself….unlike some people in the industry who just don’t change…don’t hate on Ice Cube making that money in a positive way…dang i had a crush on him since i dunno…if only he was not married & had no kids…lmao

  • Darth H8ter

He went from a fake thug, to a fake muslim to a (hopefully real) family guy Good for him promoting positive images and opportunity.

  • Christie’s secrets (la vie serait plus belle si j’avais un job !!! grace a dieu tout ira bien tres bientot)

    …COM …….By the way, I am S E X Y.

  • Darkesthourglass

Ice is a smart man who knew that the Gansta phase couldn’t last forever. He knew what he was doing with his transition from “gangsta” to businessman all this time. He’s very wealthy and with a family so for what reason would he stay gansta and angry all this time? He’s pushing 40 so it wouldn’t make sense. Good for Cube for having his head on straight.

  • http://www.bossip.com HogHeadCheese

Cube is a father now so ofcourse he going to change, that doesn’t make him a sell out. If you don’t have kids that you actually take care like a real father (not a daddy) you will never understand and naturally to you he will be a so-called “Sell Out”.

  • LopRod

It’s called GROWING UP! You know alot of us still do that.

  • hope4more

Lived in Inglewood next to Watts and loved NWA, but theres a time to realize that all the killing, dealing and stealing ain’t worth it. Like Magic Johnson business sense Ice Cube figured a way to use his brain and not have to go to jail to jack someone over some money. I do remember him blasting MC Hammer talking about he was a sell out on rap when Hammer was getting paid. But, good to see that he can have a positive impact.

  • SP. E-Z!!!

    IT’S CALLED PROGRESS!!!

  • Love Yourself First

Who on earth told you this man was a legitimate gangster? The real gangsters, true gangsters may be known by reputation, but not for admiration. The only rapper that I know of that actually lived in the Los Angeles area and lived a somewhat gangster style life is Ice-T.

  • Love Yourself First

As far as Beyonce being a sellout, well let’s just skip that very untrue statement.+ Why is it that when black artist make money and go “mainstream” they’re considered sellouts? Do you think Ice Cube made his million off of black fans? NO, it was white fans buying this music that catipulted him to fame. It angers me when the black community so viciously tears down our entertainers. And although I never considered him a gangster, Ice Cube has done extremely well and is a black man who heads a family of a beautiful wife and children. He’s intelligent and business savy. But then again so is Beyonce. If you want to know who puts our black superstars into orbit, trust me it’s not the loyal following of black fans who will bootleg any and everything as oppose to putting the money into the black film makers pockets. Before you start to tear down people, think about what you say. And as far as my remark previously towards Ice Cube, he may well have been a ganster, it’s just that every time I saw him I saw more of a hustler than a ganster. No disrespect because he has hustled his way to the top where he belongs, as does Beyonce. And as for his wife, she does smile, but I’m sure all of the media attention becomes a bit much after a awhile and you just want a normal life. God bless her for hanging in there with him.

  • Say WHAT!!!

Sorry, but if your in a gang or gang affiliated your a LOSER with no prospects in life. Go to jail and call it a day! Let hard working people live in peace.

  • Nay-Nay

Ice Cube has always been an “entertainer”. He never was a gang-banger in the first place, he grew up in a upper/working class neighborhood a lil ways from Compton closer to Inglewood and went to A H.S in Woodland Hills Calif. I guess you can say N.W.A was his first acting gig.I’m sure he’s the only one in the group “without” a rap sheet.

  • Keisha

No Cube’s not a sell out… Much love to Cube…I’m happy that Cube put his family first & converted his life into a positive one…keep it up Cube maybe these wanna be gangstas will take a lesson from you & also become a positive outlook to these young folks these days…
