Russell Simmons’ “Brave New Voices”
Posted by Bossip Staff
Get ready to get your snap on. Russell Simmons’ new project, Brave New Voices is causing quite a stir on HBO:
Coming together in a time of uncertainty and challenge, a new generation of young, American poets have something to say about their world. In 44 communities across the U.S., teenagers are competing for a spot on their regional teams in order to compete in Washington DC at the National Slam Poetry championship called Brave New Voices.
Following the story of six of these teams, Russell Simmons’ Brave New Voices is a new seven-part HBO series documenting the stories of six of the competing teams from distinct parts of the U.S. including New York, San Francisco, Ft. Lauderdale, Ann Arbor, Honolulu and Philadelphia.
Brave New Voices follows different team members as they compete in regional competitions that will determine the six poets comprising each team as they fine-tune their poems in practice sessions overseen by a team coach and share individual back stories reflecting on how the “spoken word” has changed them. They will finally join up with other teams in DC to find out who will follow Philadelphia (the 2007 winners) as the 2008 Brave New Voices team Champions.
Peep the show here and check it out on HBO, Sunday at 11PM/EST.

I can’t wait…
YAWN…
Awesome. Of course it isn’t for everyone; poetry requires that you not only have a brain, but that you use it.

I LOVE THIS SHOW! I’m a biased poet!
yes they are soo good, philly team deserved to win cause josh bennett and alysia harris are spitters. you can look at them on hbo.com and look up the show there, even see the first episode. they have really inspired me to get back into writing. this is what needs to be supported instead of that cocaine and get hoes rap nonsense
Truly awesome!
i went to see my kid & her friend (spit) at last month’s teen poetry slam at ny’s nuyorican poet’s cafe, and it was…PHENOMENAL!
the thoughts and emotions pouring out of our teen youth is serious, surprising & something-fuggin-else!
alot of them are hurt, angry and in pain.
i found these young people to be extremely brave, honest & very aware of their surroundings.
& they really do have important & inspiring, things to say.
if you have an opportunity…go and check them out.
they are THE future, you know.
@hotmilfchocolate
i really wan to attend a slam in new york, but alas, i live in michigan lol. but this spoken word is not a trend. these kids have something to say and i find it amazing they are getting their voice heard, granted the show comes on at 11pm.
