Washington D.C. is Riding With the Gays

According to the new, Livesteez, D.C., aka, Chocolate City, is siding with the gays on the same sex marriage issue:

Washington D.C.’s city council voted unanimously on Tuesday in favor of recognizing same-sex marriages from other states by a vote of 12-0.  The bill is not set to go to Congress which has the final say over D.C.’s laws which may now forces lawmakers to take action over a matter they previously left to the states.  The amendment reads:  “A marriage legally entered into in another jurisdiction between two persons of the same sex that is recognized as valid in that jurisdiction, that is not expressly prohibited by [the city's existing marriage law] shall be recognized in the District.”

According to The Associated Press, the vote came the same day that Vermont became the fourth state to legalize gay marriage and the first to do so with a legislature’s vote.  Court rulings previously led to same-sex marriages in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Iowa.  David Catania, an openly homosexual D.C. council member stated, “Let’s be clear, this is a new era… and a march toward human rights and equality” and that this could eventually lead to gay marriages being performed in the District of Columbia.

Congress will review the bill in the next 60 days and D.C. mayor Adrian Fenty is expected to sign off on the bill once Congress approves.  Fenty is also a longtime supporter of same-sex marriages.

Looks like the gays are coming up. Who knew that Cali would turn them down and they would find a home in the nation’s capitol?

Why do gay people feel the need to be seen in the same light as a man and woman as marriage is defined ? Listen as long as you and your partner have the legal stuff in order Ie. property protection, health care, pension, etal why do they need for the definition of marriage to be broader interpretation ?

    Why ?

  • DR.FUNK

Never gonna be able to understand homophobia amongst Black folk. These people are our brothers…sisters…cousins. They are family.Whether or not you knew it-these people have ALWAYS been in your life.Try this theory on for size: If we as Black people stop with the condemnation & ostracism of those who are gay.If we show respect & acceptance & appreciation. In other words…let them be who they really are without fear of rejection or worse…how could that be bad? Forcing people to stay on the “DL”
has been ruinous to our community.

    @ Lawd

Um u might need to go a little farther . I think your reasoning needs a little more explanation because while I see where your going your explanation might be taken as to broad.

  • Renee

Correction. Most voters are against redefining traditional marriage for gay couples but are fine with civil union with equal legal spousal rights(Obama is one of those people). There is NO state in America where the American voters voted for gay couples to use the word”marriage”. Voters in Iowa,Vermont,Mass,Conn and now DC didn’t VOTE for gay marriage,It was the state government.
Who is riding with the gays? State government but not the majority of American voters

  • LawdhavMercythisshitis real

the word marriage means nothing to me (but to some it does)i dont want to change a definition if a union will allow what marriage allows im fine with that and many gays

  • LADY ARCHITECT (TGIF!)

ok let me just say this…people throw out that homophobic word quicker than someone says fag…please. To have a phobia or be a phobic to something means to have intense fear that cause conscious avoidance to the point where most people with a phobia have anxiety attacks, etc. I do agree that some people are very hateful which is sad, but if you don’t agree with the lifestyle and against it for your own personal beliefs doesn’t mean you are a homophobic at all. Just felt the need to clear that up since that word is constantly thrown out there when people don’t agree with it. Please stop comparing the rights of black people to what’s going on now…it’s silly.

    Why
    ————————
What’s it to you? And why are you owed an explanation or anything else for that matter? Would you know if you walked by a married gay couple who never said or spoke a word about it? No. This isn’t about YOU. That’s a lesson anti gays needs to learn. The point of the matter is that no one should be asking your’s or anyone else’s opinion about somebody else’s personal life. You shouldn’t have a say, and it’s arrogant and unreasonable to argue otherwise. For those of us who aren’t so self centered, this is why your opposition to the matter perplexes us. Why should your personal feelings matter at all? Why are you so damn important that your disapproval should undermine some else’s happiness? Nobody cares about your opinion or how you feel. You people suffer from delusions of grandeur. Would you be willing to let the public rule on what’s appriopriate for your love life? I doubt it. No go let consenting adults do and say for themselves without your unnecessary input.

  • http://bossip I`ll Talk about what I want to talk about Nucca !

You know I agree in the black community homophobia is alive and well and that is sad. But where I feel that theer is a comparable relationship between blacks civil rights and gay people is when states would not allow gays like blacks to be legally covered , and not allwed to intergrated into society.

But like the civil rights movements blacks can on par do what whites can do and yes are rights are now legally protected. Now state by state gay people are now also being covered legally .

So the next fight for gay people is to change the general attitude of society of how gay people are seen ? Is that correct ?

  • JSTeeZ

    YES

I`m not owed an explanation nor am I asking for one. This is blog site and one where you get to ask questions. It`s not in me to judge anyone. I`m not on here thinking oh … I`m the big hetero juding folks. So if you felt that way it`s a wrongful perception on your part.

  • Niasia

Why all the homophobia black people? What will gays being able to be married do to you/ I just don’t get it! Geez sometimes my people embarrass me with their ignorance they do!

  • chaka1

Good for them. All the gays should come out and be who they are. That way I don’t end up married to a DL idiot.

  • Havanna

@I`ll Talk about what I want to talk about Nucca !

Then why ask why as you did ask? Why should there be any discrepancy in title between a legally recognized monogomaous union between straight people and one between gays? Let them be married and recognized as so. And wtf kind of question is it to ask why a gay person would insist on equal footing? That needs further explanation? Really? Is that not a GED level question that anyone who can master a coloring book can answer? Because fair is fair and equal should be just that. If you are basically arguing that civil unions and marriages are only semantically different then why should it matter if they just want the official title to be MARRIAGE? Since there is, after all, no difference between the two from a standpoint of legal rights. Why is it that the opposition is fighting so hard to keep the language barrier if it’s only strictly superficial?

    @ Angela
Angela your an retard, black people didn’t choose to be black. How many homosexuals were told they couldn’t drink out of a water fountain or told to use another restroom because they were homosexuals? uhh, none so please you non thinking people, please stop comparing gay to being black, it’s not the same.

  • http://bossip I`ll Talk about what I want to talk about Nucca !

    @ Havanna

Listen you would be better reading all my post which by the way are thought provoking i might add ! I`m fuggin taking a bow right about now ! But really more to the point you would do better going after those with an absolute hatred of gay people that does not fit anything i have posted. AND Again I posed my question for debate.

Havanna that`s how things get solved and understanding comes into play. But you seem to be a very passionite person and that`s very admirable on your part.

Water fountains and buses aren’t the be all and end all of Jim Crow and Jim Crowe is not the be all and end all of discrimination. Racial discrimination and GLBT discrimination is vastly similiar. Black people lynched- gays lynched so check. Black people legally recognized as second class citizen’s- gays legally recognized as second class so check again. Subjected to defamatory slurs check. Enduring ignorance check. @ I`ll Talk about what I want to talk about Nucca !

You’re neither funny nor well spoken. And my humor might miss you since your my punchline.

I don’t care whether or not Obama agrees with me. That not gonna provide you or anyone who thinks like you with any shelter. The times are changing. And the people en mass are always behind the curve of social change. Desegregation and women’s lib weren’t greeted with warm, fuzzy feelings either. It’s not government’s job deny a select group of people rights others take for granted. And people who disapprove of this issue can’t get beyond their personal distaste to realize that this isn’t about them. It never has been. And once again, the approval of outsiders should be beside the point, in case you haven’t noticed. You seem to think that personal taste should dictate law and human rights. I think it should be based on fairness and objectivity. Feel free to turn your nose up at all the things that you don’t like. But that should have no legal ramifications and you should accept that.

  • VanTokyo

What I am really sick of is when gays force THIS DOWN OUR THROATS!!!! Seeking rights is one thing but flaunting your behavior and parading it in the streets is another. I don’t hate gay people, but I don’t embrace their will to flaunt their sexualality in public.Keep it to ypurself. I don’t HAVE to accept it if I don’t want to and IT DOES NOT MAKE ME A HATER! IF I DON”T APPROVE>>>I I DON”T APPROVE> PERIOD>

  • whatever

All I got to say about this is if you think gay marriage is a more important issue than:

    1. the rising unemployment rate
    2. poor access to quality health care
    3. the war in Iraq and Afghanistan
    4. preventing the next 9/11
    5. budget cuts to inner city schools, public transit etc
    6. the rising cost of living

Then, you have life messed up, or you are a repressed homosexual.

  • http://BOSSIP.COM SYKLOPS 562

yes on 8!! im all for civil unions and equal rights. but no man should marry another man and no woman should marry another woman. vows are read from the bible and that would be just unholy!! i dont even know why this is an issue. if its all about the rights give them the rights a married couple would have and leave the vows out of it!!

  • Stephanie

the same arguments that they used against interracial marriage back in the day are presently being applied to gay marriage. I support gay marriage. It’s a basic civil right.

  • Keira J.

This topic is unholy. Gay relations is a sin. I think that it is disgraceful to allow these couples to marry. The should never call it a marriage. A marriage is between a man and a woman. If they want to be recognized as a legal couple then they should call it a legal gay union.

No ones deserves to be discriminated against, but they should not be allowed to marry. Marriage is a union between a man and a woman for the sole purpose of procreation. Men and women can’t procreate. It is biologically impossible because god did not intend for man and man to have relations.

  • About it

    Oh, and another thing:
Gays can get married, under the same conditions as straight people — to the opposite sex.
So now that gays can marry each other, then that means they have more “marrying options” than straights.
As far as gay being the new black: see my earlier post and also remember, blacks couldn’t get married to anyone!

  • chocolateprincess

all these so called gay people need to go repent and stop shoving their lifestyle on other people especially our children.waht i don’t like about them is that only they can express themselves if u express that u do not like that lifestyle they start to rant n rave.
