Tyler Perry’s Atlanta Studio Catches Fire

Firefighters remained at Tyler Perry Studios in southwest Atlanta early Wednesday, watching for hot spots and trying to determine what caused a spectacular blaze that damaged one of the complex’s buildings Tuesday night.

“The fire’s out, but the cause remains under investigation,” Capt. Jolyon Bundrige with the Atlanta Fire Department told the AJC just before 11 p.m.

About midnight, Bundrige said that several fire units were still on the scene, “conducting a damage assessment, including salvage and overhaul.” At least one fire truck remained at the studios at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to one building in the center of the 30-acre complex owned by Atlanta filmmaker Perry, Bundrige said.

The first report of a fire came in at 8:41 p.m., and before it was over, more than 100 firefighters had responded to a blaze that quickly escalated to four alarms.

The fascia of the affected building collapsed, but its structural integrity was not compromised, Bundrige said. No injuries were reported.

Apparently Tyler did not want anyone to know how on fire he really was…

Perry was at his Continental Colony Parkway complex Tuesday night and spoke with Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran, but did not talk to reporters gathered nearby, Bundrige said. Employees leaving the studio grounds after the fire told reporters they were instructed not to speak to the media.

All joking aside, we’re glad that no one was hurt in this incident. With all the gwap that TP got we’re pretty sure he’ll be back up and running in no time.

Actress Spends Last Dime On Billboard Begging Tyler Perry For Leading Lady Role

Racquel Bailey wants nothing more than a chance to be Tyler Perry‘s “next leading lady.” Quite literally nothing: The 23-year-old told 11Alive News she spent her “last money for the year”, about $1,500 on a self-promoting billboard situated two miles away from Perry’s southwest Atlanta studios:

“I hoped he would see it while he was driving to work, or on his way home from work, or that someone would see it!” she told 11Alive’s Blayne Alexander via Skype.

The ad includes her website, which links to samples of her work, photos and biographical information. According to her resume, her acting credits include several off-Broadway plays. She also teaches acting.

11Alive News reached out to Perry to get his response to the billboard, but his representatives had no comment. In the past, Perry has been vocal about wanting to see new talent. His website even includes a page for aspiring actors to upload videos of their work.

Bailey said she is willing to relocate to Atlanta and just hopes her bold move pays off.

“All I want is a chance,” she said. “I’m just waiting for that call.”

$1500 just to tell Tyler Perry to hire you?? Girl bye! Tyler is not sweatin’ you unless your name is light skinned Devon. That or you do something to make his inner angry black woman happy.

I called Tyler and told him how amazing that was because nobody ever does anything like that for her, on such a grand scale. And, so, the next day when I got home, there was a Bentley in my driveway!

You’d think Tyler Perry would be a recognizable figure. Especially in ATL, where he is celebrated as one of the biggest stars in the city.

But according to a post on Perry’s Facebook page, he was not recognized by a couple of white police officers during a recent traffic stop. He says he believes he was racially profiled, then let go once a black officer showed up and told the white officers who he was:

The officer came up to the driver’s door and said that I made an illegal turn. I said, “I signaled to get into the turning lane, then made the turn because I have to be sure I’m not being followed.”

Before I could answer him, I heard a hard banging coming from the passenger window. I had never been in this position before so I asked the officer who was at my window what was going on and why is someone banging on the window like that. He said, “let your window down, let your window down. Your windows are tinted.” As I let down the passenger window, there was another officer standing on the passenger side of the car. He said, “what is wrong with you?” The other officer said to him, “He thinks he’s being followed.” Then, the second officer said, “why do you think someone is following you? What is wrong with you?”

Before I could answer the officer on the passenger side, the one on the driver’s side had reached into the car and started pulling on the switch that turns the car on and off, saying, “Put your foot on the brake, put your foot on the brake!” I was so confused as to what he was doing, or what he thought he was doing. It looked like he was trying to pull the switch out of the dashboard. I finally realized that he thought that switch was the key, so I told him that it wasn’t the key he was grabbing. I reached down into the cup holder to get the key, not realizing that the key had a black leather strap on it.

Perry said the cops continued to harass him until a third officer, who, like the actor/director, is black, pulled over to the scene. Perry continued, “He took one look at me and had that ‘Oh No’ look on his face. He immediately took both officers to the back of my car and spoke to them in a hushed tone. After that, one of the officers stayed near his car while one came back, very apologetic.”

Perry pointed to two other cases that he believes involved racial profiling, including the shooting death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. He concluded his essay by writing, “RACIAL PROFILING SHOULD BE A HATE CRIME INVESTIGATED BY THE FBI!!!”

Whitney Houston’s grieving daughter now has a reason to smile.

Bobbi Kristina Brown, 18, has been cast in Tyler Perry’s TBS sitcom “For Better or Worse,” a Perry rep told the Daily News.

“(She) has been cast in a recurring role,” the source said, declining to give further details.

The news comes after the aspiring young performer told Oprah Winfrey she hoped to follow in her mother’s footsteps after Houston’s untimely death Feb. 11

“I gotta carry on her legacy,” Bobbi Kristina told Winfrey. “It’s a lot of pressure, but (my mom) prepared me for it.”

Perry, 42, is a close Houston family friend who spoke at the Grammy-winning singer’s funeral after offering his private jet to fly Houston’s body home.

Houston, 48, had yayo in her system and heart disease when a cardiac event caused her to accidentally drown in a hotel bathtub in Los Angeles Feb. 11.

The iconic singer named her daughter the sole beneficiary of her estate.

The inheritance will be placed in a trust until she turns 21 in 2014.

Congrats Bobbi Kris, but make sure you give yourself the time to grieve!!!

It really pays to have friends in high places. Just ask President Obama, who raised several million dollars during campaign stops in Illinois and Georgia Friday with help from celebrity friends Oprah and Tyler Perry.

President Barack Obama, turning full attention to his re-election campaign, aimed to raise more than $5 million today with fundraisers in his adopted hometown of Chicago and then Atlanta, where Oprah Winfrey joined with other wealthy donors.

Obama arrived in Chicago as two of the Republicans who want to challenge him in November, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, also had Illinois campaign events before the state’s March 20 presidential primary.

His stops included dinner for about 40 people, including Winfrey, at the home of actor and film producer Tyler Perry. There, Obama said of his presidency: “This is not a three-year project. This is an eight-year project,” prompting applause.

The first of Obama’s five stops was at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago, where about 600 people paid $2,500 a piece to watch the campaign film and listen to the president.

Without naming his would-be opponents, Obama said the state has “guests this week,” referring to the campaigning leading up to the primary.

“Welcome to the Land of Lincoln,” Obama said. Taking an indirect dig at his rivals, he said that he hoped “maybe some Lincoln will rub off on them while they are here,” and told the audience to prepare for “an avalanche of attack ads.”

The state’s Republican Party chairman, Pat Brady, criticized Obama for concentrating on his campaign.

“After three years of failed policies, broken promises and a seemingly endless supply of empty rhetoric, it is abundantly clear that President Obama has given up on governing and is only concerned about campaigning to save his own job,” Brady said in an e-mailed statement.

After the speech, the president held a closed discussion with about 60 supporters who donated at least $10,000 each.

In Atlanta, Obama began his fundraising at a private residence where 75 people paid $10,000 each to attend. He then greeted 1,000 supporters at Perry’s studios, an event that included a musical performance by Cee Lo Green. Most of the tickets started at $500 with a smaller number sold at $250, according to the campaign.

At the first Atlanta stop, Obama jabbed at the Republicans. “Their basic vision is, ‘You know what? I’ve got mine,’” he said. “And that’s why the other side really doesn’t talk about issues.”

Obama capped the day at Perry’s house. Tickets to that cost $35,800. Perry gave $30,400 on May 30, 2009, to the Democratic National Committee and $4,600 Sept. 12, 2007, to Obama’s first presidential campaign, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks contributions.

The money raised today goes to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint account for the president’s campaign organization and the Democratic National Committee. Obama raised $140 million for his re-election campaign through the end of January, Federal Election Commission reports show.
