Who knew Camel liked cognac? The rapper/mogul threw a launch party this week for D’Ussé cognac and from the sound of it, had a blast. But don’t worry about Bey, she caught up at the after hours spot.

Even though he’s a co-owner of the New Jersey Nets (soon to be the Brooklyn Nets), Jay-Z made sure all could watch the New York Knicks battle the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the NBA playoffs during a party he hosted for Bacardi’s new cognac, D’Ussé (pronounced Deuce-ay). The rapper brought in flat-screen televisions to the Top of Standard Wednesday night, to make sure guests including Steve Stoute, Kevin Liles, Pharrell and Jake Gyllenhaal could stay tuned in to Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks. Jay-Z’s sister-in-law, Solange Knowles, and mother-in-law, Tina Knowles, were also at the event, but Beyoncé wasn’t there. The new mom of 4-month-old Blue Ivy later met up with her husband at The Darby, where Zoe Saldana, Gerard Butler and Wyclef Jean were also hanging out. Jean gave an impromptu performance of songs from the Fugees with Rachel Brown, the Wednesday night musical act, and the two singers ended her set with a duet of Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song.”

Y’all know we gotta ask… Do y’all really wanna drinks something with a name so similar to BADUSSY???

Friends…how many of us have them?

Pras says there’s no bad blood between him and Wyclef Jean after Pras didn’t back his bandmate and childhood friend in Haiti’s election, The Post’s Darryl Harrison reports. “It’s part of his theatrics, part of his politics. It’s all good,” Pras said of a song Wyclef performed that dissed him and activist Sean Penn last September. He even left the door open for a Fugees reunion — “If Fleetwood Mac can do it, if the Rolling Stones can do it,” he mused.

Glad these two could squash the beef. At one point we would have loved to see a Fugees reunion, but if Lauryn can’t keep her isht together then we’d rather not ruin the memory that we have.

Wyclef wasted no time crying foul about the New York Post’s article this weekend claiming that Yele Haiti is still up to no good.

But the way he did it still makes us give him the side eye a little.

First, he issued this statement through AFaceAFace.com, a “keep an eye on the evil mainstream media” site he started some time after the Earthquake:

I started Yele in 2005 because I wanted to help people that were helpless in my home country of Haiti. People who didn’t have a voice, people who didn’t have resources, people who had mostly been forgotten. Since Yele launched six years ago we have helped close to half a million people. I will always love and serve the Haitian people until the day I die.


 The NY Post piece entitled, “Questions Dog Wyclef’s Haiti Fund” is misleading, deceptive and incomplete. The Post conveniently fails to acknowledge that the decisions that Yele made were a response to one of the world’s most catastrophic natural disasters in modern history and required an immediate humanitarian response. There were no roads, no clean water, no sanitation, no banks, no electricity, no infrastructure. Immediate decisions were made to save lives and alleviate suffering. We made decisions that enabled us to provide emergency assistance in the midst of chaos and we stand by those decisions. We did the best we could with the available resources. I am proud of the way that Yele handled the crisis on the ground in 2010. We were able to feed, clothe, provide medical assistance and shelter for more than 250 thousand people in need.


 What the article doesn’t say is that the construction projects funded by Yele Haiti were responsible for rebuilding an orphanage, building a temporary assistance facility, and had constructed a system of out door toilet and shower facilities in Cite Soliel one of the largest slums in Port-au-Prince.


 The Post never highlights that Amisphere Farm Labor was responsible for preparing and delivering close to 100,000 meals. The Samosa SA property referenced by the Post was located in the vicinity of the largest tent camps in Port-au-Prince. Yele chose that location because it was closest to
the people it needed serve.


 All of these facts as well as photos and testimonials were readily available to the Post for their story. Unfortunately, they chose not to include these facts and instead chose to imply that Yele “squandered” donors money. Nothing could be further from the truth. Finally, the percentage of funds used is consistent with NGOs and Not For Profits operating in Haiti at the time. I have acknowledged that Yele has made mistakes in the past, including being late in IRS filings, but that is old news. When I entered politics last summer, I transitioned from being a board member and chairman of Yele Haiti to a supporter. The new and good news is that Yele under new leadership, despite efforts to undermine its credibility and effectiveness, continues its mission to serve people in need.

Here’s our issue with the statement: it implies that Wyclef knew about this article ahead of time. So why wouldn’t his PR team work to ensure it was balanced (or pulled altogether)? And if they couldn’t, why wouldn’t they have had him on somebody’s Sunday talk show clearing it up? You want us to think you can’t pull those types of strings Clef?

But here’s what really made us give him the side eye…

The mayor of the city of North Miami may have thought Wyclef‘s do-gooder-ness was worthy of recognition last week, but people are stil giving him and his Yele Haiti foundation the side-eye.

Yele Haiti’s coffers swelled to $16 million in 2010, the most the charity had ever received. But less than a third of that went to emergency efforts, and $1 million was paid to a Florida firm that doesn’t seem to exist, The Post has learned.

Jean’s charity, which he founded in 2005 with his cousin Jerry Duplessis, was already troubled when the earthquake struck Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010. The Post reported in 2008 that it had never filed a required tax form detailing its spending with the IRS.

The group lost $244,000 in 2009. But hours after the earthquake hit, Jean took to Twitter to beg for $5 donations. An avalanche of donations poured in.

Almost immediately, allegations surfaced that the former Fugees singer had used the charity’s cash for his own benefit. Critics found that four years earlier Yele Haiti had steered $250,000 to a Haitian TV station controlled by Jean and Duplessis.

Jean held a Jan. 18, 2010, press conference to tearfully defend Yele Haiti’s reputation.

“Have we made mistakes before? Yes,” Jean said. “Did I ever use Yele money for personal benefits? Absolutely not. Yele’s books are open and transparent.”

The earthquake killed between 200,000 and 300,000 Haitians and left a million homeless. The country is still in the grip of a cholera epidemic.

For all the desperation, records show that Yele Haiti spent just $5.1 million for emergency relief efforts, including food and water delivery to makeshift survivor camps, according to a review of the charity’s 2010 tax filings, which were obtained by The Post.

Yele Haiti paid five contractors to accomplish its goals, including P&A Construction — which received $353,983 and is run by Warnel Pierre, the brother of Jean’s wife, Claudinette.

A purported Miami business called Amisphere Farm Labor Inc. received a whopping $1,008,000 as a “food distributor.”

No trace of the company could be found last week in the Sunshine State, but records show the company’s head, Amsterly Pierre, bought three properties in Florida last year, including a condo in an upscale waterfront community.

The firm incorporated in August 2008 but never filed any of the subsequent financial paperwork required to do business in Florida, according to the Florida Department of State.

The address listed for the business is an auto-repair shop in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood, where a worker said he had never heard of Pierre or Amisphere. Pierre did not return a call for comment.

Yele Haiti also paid $577,185 to a company called Samosa SA, based in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, as a “bulk water supplier.” But some of that money went to rent a house for Yele Haiti volunteers on Samosa’s property at the inflated price of $35,000 a month.

“Given the fact that Yele Haiti was involved in a swirl of controversy after the earthquake in Haiti, it’s all the more reason to be more transparent to ensure donors that their funds are going to help people,” said the Better Business Bureau’s Bennett Weiner.

In Clef’s defense, a lot of charities’ hands have been tied by red tape and political BS in Haiti following the earthquake, due to the fact that the outbound government at the time wasn’t necessarily all that interested in seeing the country move forward. Yele also wouldn’t be the first American-based charity to partner with people who didn’t necessarily have the best intentions when it came to actually helping Haiti.

But you would think, at this point, Wyclef would do a better job of covering his a$$ and making sure everything he and Yele did was on the money…

The Haiti native, who lost his bid to become president of his home country, was talking about the many virtues of the former vice presidential candidate Monday night at a post-fashion show party.

“I have to tell you this, I am a huge fan of Sarah Palin,” Jean said at the after party for the Donna Karen Collection show.

Why does he like the spunky Alaska native? “Cause she’s rad. She’s shrewd. She’s cool. Because at the end of the day, I’m for the people, because this is the United States of America…this is what America’s really about,” the Fugees band member said. “Anyone should have the right to say, ‘Look I can do the job and this is what qualifies me to do the job.’”

There is one person who might not be as big a Sarah Palin fan though. “Now my wife probably will debate and disagree with me,” Jean told Women’s Wear Daily.

Clef goes on to say:

“I’m not saying she could be the next president, you know, but there’s something about her. Heavy debates in my house,” he said. ”Whenever I say Sarah Palin, people think I’m crazy, but I like her, I do. I can like whoever. This is America, right?”

Poor thang! This whole “being-politically-active-in-your-homeland” thing hasn’t worked out so well for Wyclef.

Hip-hop singer Wyclef Jean was recovering Sunday after he was shot in the hand, his publicist said.

Spokeswoman Cindy Tanenbaum said Jean, who was in Haiti, was shot in Port-au-Prince on Saturday — on the eve of the country’s presidential runoff vote.

The wound was superficial, she said.

The singer was taken to a hospital, treated and released.

“He is doing well,” Tanenbaum said.

Haitians are choosing between a former first lady and a popular musician Sunday in the pivotal presidential runoff vote for a nation still recovering from a devastating earthquake and political turmoil.

Former law professor and first lady Mirlande Manigat faces singer Michel Martelly in the second round of presidential elections.
Final results of the runoff will be released on April 16, according to officials.

Jean, who was born in Haiti, shot to fame in the mid-1990s as a member of the Fugees, a U.S.-based hip-hop and reggae group. He now performs as a solo artist.

He has been an outspoken proponent of Haiti through his Yele Haiti Foundation and was one of the first celebrities to offer aid after the earthquake.

In September, he officially ended his bid to be president of Haiti a month after election officials ruled that he was ineligible to run.

Jean previously vowed to fight the Haitian electoral council’s ruling that he was not a resident of the country.

As much as we kinda wanna laugh at “shot in the hand,” we hope this isn’t a foreshadowing of the climate in Haiti today.

Update: Wyclef was apparently getting out his car when he heard gunfire. He says he then noticed blood on his shirt and shoes, but had no clue where the shots came from or if they were aimed at him.

Jimmy “Henchman” Rosemond tells AllHipHop.com he thinks “it is clear that enemies of progressive change in Haiti are behind the shooting of Wyclef -those that don’t want to accept that a monumental change is inevitable for the betterment of the Haitian people.”

With tomorrow marking the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti last January 12, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, like countless other Haitians and celebs, headed to the island today.

‘Clef shared this picture with his 1.7 Million Twitter followers this afternoon, with the caption:
