John McWhorter

Traditionally, when the media wanted African-American commentary on the news topic of the day, there were the predictable go-to-guys: Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson or Reverend [insert name here], to name a few. However, in the midst of a digital revolution and in the age of Obama, a new generation of African-American scholars has emerged. While they are all educated, opinionated and engaged, interchangeable they are notThrough writings, activism, interviews and commentary, these 11 commentators and bloggers have proved to be some of the most interesting African-American voices heard above the crowd. And, obviously, there are many riveting pundits out there but we had to narrow down our list to a mere 11.

Popular Democratic Senator Said America Was Ready for a “Light-Skinned President With No Negro Dialect”

A new day and a new case of a politician saying something racially suspect and stupid:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has apologized for racial remarks he made during the 2008 presidential campaign about then-candidate Barack Obama after they were revealed in a forth-coming campaign book, “Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime. The book recounts private remarks made by Reid during the campaign — in support of Obama — that the country was ready for a “light-skinned” African-American president with “no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”

Hosea Chanchez

In an exclusive interview with Bossip, Hosea Chanchez, who plays Malik on the CW’s The Game, puts the television industry on blast for for their lack of Black representation as well as calls Black people out for their “lazy” activism. And, of course, you know we got the scoop on The Game:

Bossip: We personally feel like The Game was moved to Friday nights because the network is trying to cancel the show. It’s a setup. Is there any truth to that?
Hosea: I think that white America does not know what to do with Black people in television. I would hate to believe that it was a conspiracy to purposely eliminate us. We as black people are literally getting wiped off of the face of television. Continue »

A Message from The Bossip Editorial Staff

Starting in 2007, our editorial team decided that we would put the weight of our website which attracts over 1 million unique visitors a month behind a special transformational figure, Barack Obama. We were particularly attracted to what symbolism he and Michelle represented to the world and in particular, Black America.

It’s time for a change in the way we think about ourselves, our responsibility for our own success, and the way we look at the opportunities that exist in the world. We hope that a Barack Obama presidency will kill the dated and bankrupt “Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton” political thinking in Black America and replace it with something more in line with the times and cultural dynamics in which we live.

You won’t see a celebrity at the top of Bossip for the next 2 days. It’s all about Barack and Michelle.

We want everyone to post if they voted, where they voted, and what this election means to them.

The Hudson Family Memorial Services

A host of friends, family, and celebrities came out to support Jennifer Hudson and her remaining immediate family:

As Jennifer Hudson attempts to cope with the monstrous tragedy that recently befell her family, the Oscar-winner has been kept afloat by an outpouring of support from famous friends. On Monday afternoon on Chicago’s South Side, Beyoncé, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Fantasia, Missy Elliot, Patti LaBelle and Queen Latifah were among the 450 mourners packing the pews of the Apostolic Church of God for the memorial ceremony to celebrate the life — and mourn the loss of — Jennifer’s mother Darnell Donerson, her brother Jason, and her 7-year-old nephew, Julian King, who, according to a family friend, all looked “peaceful and well-rested” in their open caskets. Also on hand for the service was Chicago native Oprah Winfrey, who opened up her home to the grieving star. “Jennifer has been staying at Oprah’s East Lake Shore Drive condo,” a source tells OK!.”There’s plenty of privacy and security there for the heartbroken performer.” After following a procession of three hearses and a horse-drawn trolley carrying the child’s coffin, Jennifer entered the church with her fiancé, David Otunga. “She walked in the church with David,” an eyewitness tells OK!. “He was at her side the entire service, wiping her tears and holding her. Jennifer looked equally in shock and mournful throughout the service, but managed a smile when speakers shared their memories of her family.” “Jennifer looked upset but managed to keep herself together,” a friend tells OK!. The 27-year-old shared the front row with Julian’s mother, Julia, and comforted her sister as she “cried the loudest of anyone.” Despite the difficulties of saying goodbye, Jennifer, 27, and Julia, 31, experienced some uplifting moments. “Jennifer managed a smile when speakers shared their memories of her family,” adds the insider, “and Fantasia brought the house down with her singing.”

We pray that this joyous homegoing service helps to bring closure to the gaping wound left by this miserable tragedy. Hopefully the family will soon be able to focus on the love and not the pain.

And one more inside the chapel when you… Continue »

Hi Hater

Now that we are close to the voting day, we want to throw a ‘Hi Hater’ on Harlem’s Pastor Manning who has been ridin’ on Obama all year. Make sure you watch the full video to get your comedy high on today.

What other negroes were against the rise of Obama? Magic Johnson, BET’s Robert Johnson, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Charles Rangel, Jesse Jackson, and the list goes on and on.

On November 4, all the old-time negroes with “plantation politics” will know their time is up if they don’t know it already.

Pastor Manning:

Barack is an emissary of the devil

Jesse Jackson:

I want to cut off his nuts

BET’s Robert Johnson:

“And to me, as an African-American, I am frankly insulted that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton, who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues since Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood – and I won’t say what he was doing, but he said it in the book – when they have been involved.”

Johnson was referring to Obama smoking rocks in college.

NY Times/CBS Poll: Obama is Up on The Old Man 53-39%

Posted on October 14th, 2008 - By Bossip Staff

Categories: Barack Obama, Bolitics, News

The latest national poll has Obama splitting the old man’s wig:

Over all, the poll found that if the election were held today, 53 percent of those determined to be probable voters said that they would vote for Mr. Obama and 39 percent said they would vote for Mr. McCain. The McCain campaign’s recent angry tone and sharply personal attacks on Senator Barack Obama appear to have backfired and tarnished Senator John McCain more than their intended target, the latest New York Times/CBS News poll has found.

After several weeks in which the McCain campaign unleashed a series of harsh political attacks on Mr. Obama, trying to tie him to a former 1960s radical, among other things, the poll found that voters see Mr. McCain as waging a more negative campaign than Mr. Obama. Six in 10 of those surveyed said that Mr. McCain had spent more time attacking Mr. Obama than explaining what he would do as president; by the same margin voters said Mr. Obama was spending more of his time explaining than attacking.

It’s a little late in the game for the old man to be down this much and come back. No Cents, Jesse Jackson, and other useless negroes will have to bow down, there is a new star in town. Someone (Michelle too) we can be proud of and encouraged if our kids want to be like him.

Don’t get too excited, get your a*s up and vote November 4, people are known to lie when being asked who they would vote for. The ‘Bradley Effect’ is real.

Back in 2007 our editors took notice of a special and gifted individual who had the potential to become the next President of the Free World. We decided early on that we would go full blast and put our site behind Barack Obama. Although we believe America and the entire world needs Barack Obama, our people in particular are in desperate need to see a force of change. If our communities had more Barack and Michelle’s out there, where would we be? If you are not feelin’ his politics and question whether the change you seek is really possible in America, the symbolism and principles (strong family, hard work, self-responsibility, intellectualism) he and Michelle represent alone to our youth is worth your vote. .

Although negroes such as Jesse Jackson and Robert Johnson and some racist white folks want to cut off Obama’s nuts, its our generation’s responsibility to get out there in battleground states such as Ohio, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia to pull him over the top. Our ancestors will be watching on November 4th to see if you took 5 minutes out of your day to ride for something other than yourself.

If our country doesn’t elect Obama on November 4th, we deserve to go into another Great Depression.

Click here to register to vote today. Stay tuned for more information on the Bossip election party the night of November 4 in the ATL!
