A family of five, including 3 children, has been found shot to death at a home in Virginia in what authorities believe is a murder-suicide.
The Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office said the victims were two adults, both 35 years old, and three children.
The bodies of Clarence and Shauna Washington and their three daughters — 4-year-old Olivia, 6-year-old Onya and 13-year-old Omesha — were found inside their three-bedroom home Sunday night, Fox affiliate WTTG reported.
The Washingtons were having ongoing domestic disputes and the investigation has been preliminarily classified as a murder-suicide, according to the station, which also reported that a gun was found at the scene.
Investigators have not identified the shooter but believe it was one of the two adults. They suspect a dispute between the married couple led to the incident.
Officers said a family member discovered the bodies at the home just outside Culpeper, a town of about 15,000 people 70 miles southwest of Washington that is known for its quaint downtown and Civil War history.
“This is definitely a shock to the community, for sure,” Culpeper Mayor Michael Olinger said. “Very seldom do we have a murder in Culpeper or any kind of activity such as this.” He said he did not know the victims.
Deputies arrived at the scene around 10 p.m. Sunday, after the relative found the bodies inside the home.
Virginia State Police are assisting in the investigation.
