A Florida (of course) woman is asking for damages after doctors wrongfully diagnosed her with cancer and accidentally removed part of her rectum.
A Winter Park woman filed a lawsuit Tuesday asking a judge to order Florida Hospital to surrender records documenting a lab mix-up that resulted in a false cancer diagnosis and the removal of a section of her rectum.
In the suit, the woman is identified as Jane Doe.
“I really thought I was dying for many months,” she said in a phone interview.
The mix-up happened in December, according to the suit, either at Florida Hospital Winter Park, where she had gone for a routine colon exam, or in a laboratory at Florida Hospital’s main facility on Rollins Street in Orlando.
Someone mislabeled her tissue sample from the routine colonoscopy, mixing it up with one taken from a man with rectal cancer, the suit alleges.
As a result, on Jan. 14 she had surgery at Florida Hospital, and doctors removed part of her rectum.
A hospital spokeswoman, Samantha Kearns Olenick, said Florida Hospital does not comment on pending litigation.
The woman who had the surgery, a 68-year-old retiree, agreed to speak to the Sentinel on the condition that she not be named.
She had a colonoscopy because her fiancé insisted she needed one.
Afterward, when she was told she had a very aggressive form of cancer, she was stunned, she said.
Before the surgery, she could tell there was a problem with the diagnosis.
A series of pre-operative biopsies to try to pinpoint the cancer’s location kept coming back negative, she said.
She said she asked the hospital to double-check the labwork.
Personnel there said they did and that she did, in fact, have cancer, she said.
After the operation, lab work on the tissue the surgeon removed showed it to be cancer-free, she said.
On May 4 her doctor called, saying that DNA testing confirmed that there never had been any cancer, according to the suit.
Now that’s a HELLUVA mixup…
How much do you think she deserves in damages????
