We are so sad to report that Joanne Borgella has passed.
R.I.P. Joanne Borgella, “American Idol” Alum Has Died After Battle With Cancer
According to Daily Venus Diva reports:
American Idol contestant, plus size model and designer Joanne Borgella died Friday evening from a rare form of cancer, according to several of her colleagues and close friends.
In addition to appearing on the NUVOtv hit Curvy Girls, Borgella enjoyed a career as a successful plus size model and she made it into the Top 12 Girls category on the seventh season of American Idol in 2008.
As a model, Joanne has modeled for top brands like Ashley Stewart, Macy’s and Nordstrom and has been featured in Seventeen, Essence and InStyle.
In October 2013 Joanne shared a video alerting her fans that she had been diagnosed with cancer. Through a series of videos, Joanne continued to update those following her journey.
“It’s a rare case because it’s spread to my chest,” Joanne shared during her first video, “but it’s really not about a stage [of disease]. God is with me and I feel his presence every day. I just wanted to share this information with everyone to let them know what I’m going through and I’m going to update everyone every week as much as I can.”
If you follow Joanne on social media, then you are aware of how frequently she discussed her faith as she dealt with this disease.
Truly sad news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Joanne’s family and friends. We actually first learned the news early this morning via an Instagram message posted by plus size model Liris Crosse.

1st I lost Natasha Duncan, then #MiaAmberDavis &now u @JoanneBorgella my 3 model angels😢..I recall this day like it was yesterday! @joanneborgella & I ran into each other at a casting & decided to go talk afterwards. What was supposed to be a 10min talk turned into hours! We went shopping, hit up Chipotle & even ended up eating at a yogurt spot, thats how much we didn’t want our day to end! We talked about the industry& how we could change it, we talked about finding love while also being models (she had found the love of her life in her new fiancé), we talked about friendships & family! We didn’t see each other like we used to since we were at different agencies but the love hadn’t wavered. She was always genuine , we were never catty or competing even though we went up for the same jobs. We encouraged each other, loved each other! I wish I could have that day back but all I have is the pictures for memories. I laugh at how we were amazed it was taking like 20 takes for us to get a selfie together! We laughed at our silly selves, that day was a good day. Joanne what I learned from you recently is to embrace the journey whether good or bad. You fully embraced your #cancer journey with zest, love, a open heart, positivity & FULL #FAITH in God! When times were good you thanked God, when times were bad you thanked God! You inspired me even more than you’ll ever know. I’m so glad u got to travel, work doing amazing stuff, be on #AmericanIdol & release music, model for great jobs, got the chance to fall in love & experience true love & support while engaged, have a supportive family! I’ll miss you singing at the drop of a dime, your boisterous laugh, your smooth skin, flawless face & the positive energy you shared to all of us! I’m glad you’re no longer in pain. I’m sure Natasha & Mia Amber greeted you already with open arms. Tell them I said hi & you all watch over us please. Love you always Joanne! #RIP #RestInParadise #RestInLove #JoanneBorgella #ihatecancer #cancerFollowing
