Ice Cream Truck Driver Kills 7-Year-Old Riding Motor Scooter

The driver of an ice cream truck struck and killed a 7-year-old boy riding a motorized bike in South Los Angeles just after 7 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

After the collision, a crowd attacked the driver, who suffered bruises, according to Officer Nuria Venegas, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

The child, who later died at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, had been riding alongside the truck, trying to keep up, when he lost control and fell under its back wheels, police said.

“I walked outside. He was lying on the ground bleeding, so I just tried to comfort the family ’cause they was screaming,” witness Linda Black told KCBS. “It’s really sad because I have a kid that is younger than he is.”

One of the child’s neighbors, Jackie Johnson, said that the little boy would be sorely missed.

“He’s well-loved around here. He play with all the kids. He play with my grandson,” she said to the station.

The driver, who was not identified, said people threw bricks at his vehicle and one person even threatened him with a knife.

Police say they think the collision was an accident and charges have not been filed.
