New Music: John Legend ft. Common – “Glory”

With protests popping up around the country over racial injustice and police violence, this track is right on time.

Common Says:

Glory is a direct descendent of the inspiration behind the film; the movement of Dr. Martin Luther King, his leadership team and the everyday women and men who changed the world.

The mission for “Glory” was to create a song that both captured the spirit of the people of the civil rights movement and connected that journey to what is going on in America today – so much has changed and so much still needs to change. Most importantly, I wanted to express that in everyday people lies the victory, that within ordinary people are extraordinary acts that will change the world and that all of us have a part to play in this change.

John Legend Says:

This film is such a powerful depiction of one of the most important moments in American history, a major moment in the struggle for civil rights, led by the late great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. When Ava approached us to write a song to close the film, we strove to capture the indomitable, optimistic spirit of the protesters, and we also sought to connect it to the ongoing struggle for civil rights today. As we’ve seen in places like Ferguson, Missouri, the struggle is not over. And music has always been a critical part of this movement. From Paul Robeson to Mahalia Jackson to James Brown to Nina Simone to Marvin Gaye to Bob Dylan, we have seen great artists provide the soundtrack and the inspiration for protesters to know that they could “overcome.”
