Sevyn Streeter Talks To BOSSIP About New Single, B.o.B And Chris Brown

R&B songstress Sevyn Streeter is making waves across the music industry with her latest single “Don’t Kill The Fun” featuring Chris Brown, and BOSSIP caught up with her to chat about everything from the song, to what she’s learned from Chris, to Valentine’s Day plans with her boo-thang B.o.B and more.

Check out our chat below.

What’s the concept behind your new single “Don’t Kill The Fun?”
“Don’t Kill The Fun”
is like the theme song for my life. I got to a place where I just didn’t want to put myself in a box. I like all kinds of records and I’m all over the place and I wanted to approach my album that way. House, trap, drums, bass, I like all of it.

With the lyrics, I really did just want to write something positive and encouraging. I felt like with all that we went through last year with losing kids and just everything, I wanted to pull all of that feeling into this and make something positive in light of it all.

Chris brown is on the record with you and you’ve also been working with him for a while now. What’s the most important thing that you’ve learned from watching him go through tough times and still continue to put out music in the midst of it all?
At the end of the day, we’re so blessed to be able to do what we love. I had a session not too long ago and wasn’t having the best day but once I got in the studio, my whole vibe changed. It’s so crazy but, it really is true, no mater what type of day I have, the second my session starts, I like totally get lost in it.

And that’s what I’d have to say I learn the most from seeing Chris continue to do what he loves so well no matter what is going on in his life. No matter what goes on around you or what you’re going through, when you’re passionate about your artistry, i’s like therapy. There’s no greater feeling than that. It results in great music.

Next we played a little game with Sevyn and asked her a few questions to determine what “kills her fun” and what doesn’t. And she even responded to boyfriend B.o.B’s recent Instagram comments about the “proper” way to choke during sex. See what else she had to say on the flip.

Ok, let’s have some fun with “Don’t Kill The Fun.” I’m going to name a few things and you tell me if they kill your fun or not and why.
Ok. I love these games [laughs]. Let’s go.

Ok, first up, Eggplant Friday. Kills the fun or doesn’t?
Doesn’t kill the fun.  It’s supposed to be funny and it is. That’s what it’s for; it’s hilarious.

Being compared to other artists..
Hmm. A little of both. If it’s someone that you look up to, it doesn’t kill the fun because you only pray to be half as great as that. But you’re still your own artist and you don’t want people to put you in a box so, it can kill the fun in regards to that part.

Male strippers..
Doesn’t kill the fun for certain tastes. I mean, I’M not gonna get my girls and say let’s go to the male strip club. But, you know, if it’s a bachelorette party or something like that, it’s usually hilarious and a good time.

Dating rumors. You’ve been linked to everyone from August Alsina to Trey Songz to B.oB. (which turned out to be true). Basically anyone you take a photo with, you’re dating them. Does that kill your fun?
Now, THAT does kill the fun. Just because you take a picture with somebody, that doesn’t mean you’re dating. Until you hear from someone’s mouth, you never know.

Wardrobe malfunctions..
Kills the fun! I actually had one too. I had a show with Ne-Yo in Atlantic City and I had this new outfit and I was so excited about it. Literally the first song in, I popped a hole in my pants. Thank God the audience could’t see it. I pulled it off but, it killed my fun.

Not having Valentine’s Day plans..
I’m the type of girl that..no, it doesn’t. You create your own fun. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t have plans on Valentine’s Day. It’s happened before. I was single on Valentine’s Day and I just got together with my girlfriends instead

What about if you’re dating and your guy drops the ball with plans?
I think that if you are in a relationship and he drops the ball on Valentine’s Day, it all depends. If you feel special everyday of the week, you don’t HAVE to single out Valentine’s Day.

Ok, back to what kills the fun and what doesn’t. What about mismatched underwear on Valentine’s Day? Do you think it kills the fun for guys?
I don’t think they care, they not gon’ stay on! [Laughs] I think we care more than they care. We wanna get cute and sexy but I don think they care.

Speaking of them not staying on, B.o.B recently made comments about the correct way to do a “love choke” during sex. What’s your response to that….did you inspire those comments?
[Laughs.]  Well…..all I’ll say is lady in the street but freak in the sheets. I’ll leave it at that!

What are you guys’ plans for Valentine’s Day?
With us, I take things a day at a time. Between our work schedules, we’ll figure something out but, we’re not completely sure yet.

What do you want people to take away from “Don’t Kill The Fun?”
I want them to apply it to their lives. Pop it in before you go to work. Have that mentality. Don’t let anybody kill your fun or steal your joy. Live your life. You get one life..it’s only right to make it beautiful.
