KCCI.com reports:

The Ankeny School Board voted unanimously Monday to accept the resignation of a teacher who police said was intoxicated and had been in her classroom Friday.

The vote was made Monday evening.

Police said they were called to East Elementary School at 710 SE 3rd St. at 2 p.m. after receiving a report that a teacher was observed with a can of beer in her classroom.

Police said the teacher was taken into custody after testing positive during a preliminary breath test. A bag in her classroom had two empty cans of beer and four additional full cans of beer, police said.

Jennifer L. Rich, 40, of West Des Moines, was charged with one count of public intoxication and one count of child endangerment.

The incident was reported to police by a concerned parent who was in the school to assist with a Valentine’s Day party, officials said.

“We thoroughly investigate any report that raises a concern about the conduct of a staff member. Our students are our first priority,” East Elementary School Principal Julianne Taylor said to parents Monday night.

Taylor said the school has already secured a substitute for the remainder of the year. She also apologized for the incident and ensured the school’s dedication to its students’ safety.

Rich is not being held in police custody, and the case remains under investigation.
