The Bernie Mac Foundation Restructures After Ethical Problems Arise

The Bernie Mac Foundation, the organization founded by the late comedian to benefit those suffering from sarcoidosis, has undergone an internal restructuring after an audit found questionable practices. According to The Chicago Tribune, the group has outlined a conflict-of-interest policy, outlawed pay for board members and appointed an eight-person board that includes community leaders and others. Mac’s widow, Rhonda McCullough, will continue as president until she chooses to step down.


Should Graduate Students Form Labor Unions?

Many graduate students become research or teaching assistants while completing their Master’s or Ph.D programs. Despite the skills they develop during this time period, their pay and work benefits are lacking. So 60 Columbia University graduate students have formed a committee to organize a labor union. Among their grievances are insolent professors, not receiving maternity leave and other employee-like benefits…Columbia denied their requests, believing a labor union could hurt the quality of education it provides.
