There hasn’t been an African-American Student Government Association president at the University of Alabama in nearly 40 years. But now Elliot Spillers has been elected. In 1976, Cleo Thomas became the first Black SGA president at the university. Interestingly, both Spillers and Thomas ran as independent candidates opposing what is called “The Machine,” described as “a secret society that for 80 years has controlled student politics at the university,” according to a 1992 Esquire cover story.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy Is Tackling Detroit’s Many Unsolved Rape Cases

Kym Worthy built her career as a star prosecutor taking on adversaries such as former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who later resigned over charges and a conviction brought by her office. But it turns out that one of the biggest adversaries she has taken on is a failed system that allowed 11,000 unprocessed rape test kits to be abandoned in a police storage unit for, in some cases, decades.

Drake Donates Music Studio To Philadelphia High School

Drake, back in 2013, committed $75K to build a music studio at Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion High School, which had a reputation of being downtrodden. Finished the following summer, the school has finally found a teacher to run the space. Principal Linda Cliatt-Wayman said that budget issues and Strawberry Mansion’s reputation for violence place made it extremely difficult to find a committed staff member. Then came part-time music teacher Ben Diamond’s arrival back in February.
