Man Chokes Doctor’s Assistant With Stethoscope For Refusing Pain Medication

An Englewood man used a stethoscope to choke a physician assistant who refused to upgrade his pain medication, Sarasota deputies said.

John Connolly, 52, faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon after the attack at a Sarasota walk-in clinic.

Connolly, of Englewood, went to Sarasota Family Medical Walk-in Clinic, 6813 South Tamiami Trail, around 10:45 a.m. Monday because he wasn’t happy with the a pain medication he was prescribed, according to an affidavit from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

The physician assistant would not change the prescription and Connolly became enraged, yelling profanities in the clinic, deputies said.

He was asked to leave and walked out of the office, but returned a couple minutes later and confronted the physician assistant, deputies said. Connolly lunged toward the victim, took the stethoscope from around his neck and began chocking him with it, deputies said.

A witness pulled Connolly off the man.

During an interview with investigators, Connolly admitted to attacking the victim, deputies said.
