A white South Carolina sheriff has shot and critically wounded a black homeowner defending his own property against two men who had broken in, sparking an internal investigation.

Two Charleston County Sheriff’s deputies arrived to the mobile home in Hollywood, on Thursday morning after receiving a 911 call from a man identifying himself as the owner, Bryant Heyward.

When they arrived the officers reported they saw a man standing in the doorway who refused to drop his gun when requested, so one of the deputies shot him in the neck.

While he was being rushed to hospital, Heyward told police he tried to protect his home and had exchanged gunfire with two suspects before the police arrived.

By Thursday afternoon, one of the two men trying to burgle Heyward’s home was named as Thomas Zachary Brown, 22.

Brown was charged with first-degree burglary and attempted murder in connection with the home invasion.

It’s good they caught the burglar, but what of Bryant Heyward?

Meanwhile Heyward was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina with life threatening injuries, Watson said.

A hospital spokesman said Friday he had no information to report on anyone with that name.

According to the 911 calls released to the public, Heyward hid in his laundry room and waited for the police to arrive after the break-om.

‘Someone was trying to break into my house, please come,’ said Heyward.’It’s an emergency and they have guns.’

This is the story that a lot of cop-capin’ folks in the media want: “It doesn’t matter than he was black, he had a gun! The cop had every right to take a fatal shot at him!”
