Chicago’s Cook County Jail, America’s largest single-site jail, just appointed clinical psychologist Nneka Jones Tapia as executive director — a fitting choice since one-third of the inmate population is mentally ill, Huffington Post Crime reports. Tapia is the first mental health professional to ever command a large jail. Cook County Jail holds an average of about 9,000 inmates daily and 25 to 35 percent of its population suffer from mental illness. That figure was ballooned in recent years as the number of mental health facilities dropped.

Google is giving its employees 20 percent free time to come up with ways to increase the diversity of its workforce… But the new version of this perk is a little different as Google has come up with a problem to solve–how to get more minority workers at Google.“Diversity Core is a formal program in which Google employees contribute one-fifth of their time to initiatives aimed at attracting more women and minorities and creating a more welcoming culture for them — both at Google and in the tech industry,” reports USA Today.
Roger Ebert’s Widow To Produce Emmett Till Biopic
The harrowing tale of 14-year-old Emmett Till and his lynching death in the Mississippi Delta was a pivotal point of the Civil Rights Movement. A movie based on Till’s late mother’s 2004 book is forthcoming, and film critic Roger Ebert‘s widow, Chaz Ebert, is helping to develop the project.Variety reported on the upcoming film, which is based on the book, “Death of Innocence: The Story of the Hate Crime That Changed America.” The late Mamie Till-Mobley co-authored the book with journalist Christopher Benson. Ebert is working alongside Shatterglass Films in developing the film, which has not been formally titled.
