Detroit Suburb Raises Taxes To Make Police Abuse Settlement Payout

Inkster, a suburb of Detroit, has announced it will raise taxes in light of a recent $1.4 million settlement over police abuse. According to Mayor Hilliard Hampton, the city, which is one of the few Metro Detroit suburbs whose population is majority African American, needs extra money in order to pay Floyd Dent, who sued the city over a videotaped beating. Hilliard wants to enact a one-time tax hike this summer to settle with Dent…even though Inkster has a surplus… it cannot under law use its general fund to finalize such settlements. A tax hike, says city officials, is the only way to go.

The Retail Industry Fosters Racial Inequality, According To A Demos, NAACP Report

The NAACP and Demos, a public policy organization, have partnered to produce a new paper, “The Retail Race Divide: How the Retail Industry is Perpetuating Racial Inequality in the 21st Century” that finds a disproportionate number of Black and Latino workers in the retail industry live below the poverty line. “Like the overall retail workforce, the vast majority of Black retail workers are adults,” says the report…The report goes on to say that Blacks and Latinos are largely shut out of supervisory roles in the industry, relegated to lower paying positions; are the victims of wage inequality; and are forced into part-time jobs even when they’re seeking full-time work.

Pusha T Slams Virginia Sports Bar For Racist Practices

King Push took to Twitter (June 2) to slam the Venue 112 Rock N’ Sports Lounge in Virginia Beach for what the G.O.O.D. Music rapper claims are discriminatory practices against Black people. “Last night should’ve never happened @venue112,” wrote Push in an Instagram post that compiled a few of his tweets. “These ‘imaginary guest list’ u impose on potential black patrons is a slap in the face to the Great Neck community, Virginia Beach, and the 757 as a whole… A history of reviews online and on social media share in a seamless thread of bigotry involving your establishment…”
