New York Times writer Charles Blow says that there is one recurring narrative that is used to “bludgeon” the reputation of Black men: 72 percent of Black births stem from an unmarried mother…Blow calls this rhetoric “mythology.”…He acknowledges the statistic as concrete data, but he argues that there are several factors that contribute to this 72 percent rate that critics overlook. For one, most Black fathers do, in fact, live with their children…Don’t let the term “single mother” fool you, Blow warns. Yes, the mother may not be married, but this does not mean her children do not have their fathers in the picture.

Today’s mall is attracting new urban and ethnic clients..And nationwide, investors and developers are buying older malls. “Such malls can now be found in traditional Latino areas such as Southern California and Texas, but they also exist in Atlanta, Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, and Charlotte, places that have recently become major hubs for immigrants,” reports The Daily Beast. “We had a terrific recession,” notes Los Angeles-based mall maven Jose Legaspi, who has developed 12 such malls around the country. “You do well if you target specific niches that are growing. You can’t make it with a plain vanilla mall. We are creating in these places a Hispanic downtown.”


Girlfriend-Killing Oscar Pistorius To Be Released After 10 Months For “Good Behavior”

Via MSN: Oscar Pistorius will be released from prison for good behavior on Aug. 21 and go under house arrest after serving just 10 months for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, South Africa’s department of corrections said Monday. “He’s behaving himself very well,” Acting National Commissioner of Correctional Services Zach Modise told The Associated Press. “He hasn’t given us any problems.” Yet three months after he leaves Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria, likely for the comfort of his uncle’s mansion, the double-amputee Olympic athlete will again face the possibility of a murder conviction and could be sent back to jail — this time for a minimum of 15 years.
