Sixty Famous Mississippi Natives Take Out Ad Petitioning Flag Be Changed

Isn’t it time to put an end to the symbol of so much hate?

According to NY Daily News reports

A mass of famous Mississippians — including actor Morgan Freeman, singer Jimmy Buffett, author John Grisham and NFL legend Archie Manning — are calling for the Confederate emblem on the state’s flag to fly away for good.

More than 60 notable names signed a full-page ad in Sunday’s Clarion-Ledger insisting their home state follow the path of its Southern neighbors in nixing the Civil War symbol.

“The Rebel flag was never meant to fly over state capitols,” the letter says.

“It is simply not fair, or honorable, to ask black Mississippians to attend schools, compete in athletic events, work in the public sector, serve in the National Guard, and go about their normal lives with a state flag that glorifies a war fought to keep their ancestors enslaved… It’s time for Mississippi to fly a flag for all its people.”

Some prominent Mississippi politicians have been calling for the flag redo since June, but thus far Gov. Phil Bryant has resisted, saying in a statement he does not “believe the Mississippi Legislature will act to supercede the will of the people.”

In a Clarion-Ledger survey, 64 Mississippi lawmakers said they supported a redesign, 24 opposed it, nine were undecided and 96 would not answer.

Mississippi still kinda scares us honestly, even though lately it’s seemed like Missouri is the most racist place to be black right now. How do you feel about race relations in your state? Do you find the confederate flag and symbols offensive?
