When The Checks Stop Coming In: TVT Records Is Bankrupt

The checks have stopped coming in for a particular record label who is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy:

New York based independent record label TVT Records terminated the majority of their employees today. TVT, which is home to major recording stars like Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz, Pitbull, Ying Yang Twins, The Polyphonic Spree and others, is expected to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week. It is not known how the bankruptcy filing will affect the label’s release schedule, which includes Lil’ Jon’s highly anticipated album Crunk Rock. Pitbull accused TVT Records of not properly promoting the album and placed most of the blame on Gottlieb. “I’m out here working like a slave, doing things that other artists don’t even know how to do,” Pitbull said. “A label’s there to further and promote your career, but it feels like they just keep holding me back.”

Artists need to get on their grind, because for some reason this industry does not seem too lucrative these days.

  • Kompton's Kutie

They will get picked up by somebody trust. If Lil’ Jon can go on Wild n Out and make a freakin nusery rhyme(London Bridge) sound like a hit, somebody won’t let him fall through the cracks.

Stupid “muscians”. The record label game is dead. Nobody is buying what they are selling ie. CD’s. Why would you? It’s all about file sharing and digital downloads … Shawn Fanning changed the game forever. It’s 2k8, you’re living in the late 90’s if you’re still biggin up your “record label” lol.

We went from 8 tracks to Vinyl to Cassettes to CD’s to Downloads … it’s just evolution, nothing to fear. Otherwise, go ahead and be an analog player in a digital world.

    @ Don King

Music will never die BUT music, as it’s been appropiated pre-digital revoultion dead. Would you invest in a record store? Beat Street, Brooklyn … dead. Tower Records, Los Angeles … gonzo. They’ve all gone the way of the dinosaur. I don’t need a record store …. I’m typing on one. I can buy all the music I want right now, and I’m still in bed.

Musicians need to take control of EVERY aspect of their music. They need to learn the music BUSINESS. Prince, has not released an album with a major since he was emancipated from Warner Bros. Do remember when and why Prince changed his name to the love symbol? Prince has recouped more $$$ from his online sales than he has ever made in all his previous years with a record label combined. And he was already rich …. scratch that …. WEALTHY.

It’s not enough to have a hit record …. it never really was. It’s an intelligent man’s game.

    @ Cage…what up!!

UM…PITBULL working like a slave. LMBAOOOOOO Are you serious? I haven’t heard shyt from him in years. Obviously you still ain’t workign hard enough. I like ying and yang and Lil Jon and Trillville and them, so i hope they will be alright.

For some reason I smell embezzlement here! Am i wrong for that?

  • Harlem Chic

I agree with Mr. Anderson wholeheartedly

    @mr. anderson

You better PREACH!!! I was recently reading an article in “Billboard” about a number of Latin artists who’ve cut ties with labels, gone out on their own and are killing it!! The labels are all about taking the artists $$$. That’s why so many artists are broke. Those record contracts are never in the artists favor. It always benefits the fat cats sitting in the office. Learn the business or get jacked, like the previously mentioned artists.

FYI… Teedra’s sophomore effort, The Young Lionness, was supposed to come out this month. No wonder there hasn’t been any promo for it

  • Danie Michelle

The reason you probably never heard of Teedra Moses is because she wasn’t marketed properly. They didn’t have enough marketing dollars behind and around 2003/2004 when her album was released, a whole plethora of female artist’s albums were also released including Beyonce’s debut, Amerie, and Ashanti, and I think Brandy’s.

I just got hipped to Teedra within the last month, and she her debut album is REAL good. Her live performances are off the chain too.

    Check her out…

FYI: She is a songwriter too and because of that teedra is living comfortably.

I can’t stand southern rap. I am so happy so see so many screaming, no talentless rappers out of work. They need to go to school and learn how to speak english. I love West coast & NY rappers.
