The Couple’s Gift Largest In School’s History
Star Wars creator George Lucas and wife Mellody Hobson have donated $10 million to the University of Southern California to support minority students interested in careers on screen.
The couple, who have been diversity advocates for years, earmarked the $10 million to the university’s School of Cinematic Arts to specifically help students of color, the school announced Wednesday.
Lucas and Hobson’s donation is the largest one time gift in the university’s history, according to school officials.
“Hispanic and African American storytellers are underrepresented in the entertainment industry,” Lucas said in a statement. “It is Mellody’s and my privilege to provide this assistance to qualified students who want to contribute their unique experience and talent to telling their stories.”
