NBC Set To Air “Chicago Med” Tuesday November 17
Last week BOSSIP had the chance to join the casts of Dick Wolf’s three dramatic series set in Chicago — “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago PD” and the newest — “Chicago Med” as part of NBC Chicago day. We were thrilled to speak with actors from all three shows but were extremely excited to hear from Yaya Dacosta and “Law and Order” veteran S. Epatha Merkerson as they prepare for the premiere of their new show “Chicago Med.”
When we spoke with S. Epatha Merkerson we congratulated her on holding the record for appearing in the most episodes of “Law and Order” (another Dick Wolf production) and she was extremely humble about her career, noting that Ice-T will soon tie her record once he films a 17th season of “S.V.U.”
“It is still very exciting because it’s different,” Merkerson said about the launch of the new show. ” All I’ve ever wanted to be was to be a working actor. The majority of the people in our union don’t work so I feel very appreciative that my work has been acknowledged and I have this angel, his name is Dick Wolf, who gets me work.”
Yaya had a similar reflection on her role in the new production noting, “This show is a blessing because it is connected. The fact that it’s just not any show, its ‘the baby of Dick Wolf who is a boss – the fact that it’s connected to Chicago Fire, Chicago PD. It feels like you’re coming into a family, it feels like you’re being taken care of. Can we just talk about Epatha? S. Epatha Merkerson, the fact that she’s on – well she’s not on my show, I’m on HER show. It’s so amazing. We’re in such good hands. It’s such a blessing.”
Merkerson also sang the praises of her castmates, noting that she has yet to encounter any bad apples.
“Oliver and Nick and I and Yaya did the pilot with Chicago Fire and I thought if this show works it’s going to be so cool because I just met the sweetest people. It’s been kind of a pinch me situation because you always find an a$$hole and I haven’t found one yet. I’ve been looking!
Yaya also filled us in on a few details about her character, April Sexton:
“She’s born and raised in Chicago, but of Brazilian parents,” Dacosta explained. “She changed her name to Sexton to be American. She has a younger brother who is trying to be a doctor but she’s the knowledgeable one. She wanted to be a doctor but it’s that whole traditional boy thing. My character was actually introduced last season on “Chicago Fire,” I have a history with the fireman Kelly Severide. We were high school friends, on one of the episodes last year we hooked up, but because of the friendship we are currently on our season trying to figure out what it is. Trying to see if it’s just going to be a friendship or something more, so that’s pretty fun. She’s just that nurse that the doctors can go to when they need something done and they need to trust that it’s done efficiently, she’s sweet compassionate, she’s good at her job so it’s nice to be able to play a role like that.”
For those of you who don’t already know Kelly Severide is played by the very handsome Taylor Kinney (aka Lady Gaga’s fiance) so Yaya may be having some really fun sex scenes we can look forward to.
Before you forget “Chicago Med” airs tonight at 9 on NBC so clear your schedule or set your DVR!
