Media Ignored Daniel Holtzclaw Verdict

The Daniel Holtzclaw case has been on our minds for a while now, since news came out that he’d be tried for raping 13 Black women while serving as a police officer in Oklahoma. We at Bossip – as well as other publications with large African-American readerships – have tried to keep our hands on the pulse of the story from the beginning. However, many other outlets have either ignored the case minimized the story.

On Thursday night, Holtzclaw was convicted on half the counts of rape he was charged with and faces hundreds of years in prison. This is a huge victory after seeing so many police officers get off for horrible crimes they’ve committed against people of color. It’s good to know at least one won’t be seeing freedom any time soon. However, we were struck by few outlets made this story a big deal last night. What does this say about the value of Black lives and the way we treat Black women?

We weren’t the only people to notice the silence…take a look at some people who called the media out and how they helped keep the story alive for people who didn’t know.
