School Apologizes For Teaching About White Privilege

A high school in Virginia has had to apologize to the student body after several white parents were upset about their children learning the harsh realities that Black and brown people in this country face simply by virtue of not being born white. The educational clip uses a track race as a metaphor to demonstrate white privilege…but parents feel like it was meant to guilt the white students.

A Virginia high school has apologized for showing a ‘racially divisive’ video explaining the concepts of structural racism and privilege.

The animated film, called The Unequal Opportunity Race, was shown at Glen Allen High School to spark discussions during Black History Month, but parents were outraged and called it a ‘white guilt video’.

The four-minute film, created by the African American Policy Forum for elementary and secondary school students, depicted white and black athletes in an actual race.

Superintendent Pat Kinlaw said the video was not the best way to deliver a lesson about race, while Reverend Tyrone Nelson, Chair of Henrico County Board of Supervisors, didn’t see why an apology was issued.

Other parents took to social media to defend the video, saying young people needed to be educated about race, not sheltered from reality.

One parent and Henrico County Schools graduate told WTVR that if America’s racial history is presented accurately, ‘the truth is that some white people will feel guilty; as some black people will feel angry.’

Well facts are what they are. The school shouldn’t have to apologize for shedding light on the issue for kids who may not be sure what the term means. Do you think the school was right to pull the lesson?
