Protesters Highlight Names Of Black Police Brutality Victims
With all that’s going on in the political race these days, one group of protesters wanted to make sure that the African American victims of police brutality aren’t forgotten in the shuffle. An activism group called Indecline put the names of victims all over the Hollywood Walk of Fame to draw attention to their importance. Via Complex:
The Black Lives Matter movement may be a part of the mainstream consciousness now, especially after Black Lives Matter activists met with Barack Obama and with an HBO documentary about the movement on the way. But the work is, unfortunately, far from done, as seen earlier this month when Black Lives Matter crashed a New York comedy show to raise awareness about a teen who died in police custody. People besides Black Lives Matter members are working to remind people of black lives lost like Freddie Gray and Eric Garner, even if it means adding them to stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame got turned into a walk of shame for police brutality on Saturday reports Breitbart.
The Root reports the action was done by a group called Indecline led by Ryen McPherson, who spoke to The Root. Empty stars on the Walk of Fame were filled with the following names: Oscar Grant, Kimani Gray, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray, Dontre Hamilton, and Aiyana Stanley-Jones.
Breitbart reports a blog linked to Indecline’s Instagram provides an explanation for the action. It reads:
“Indecline wanted to basically say that the few men and women featured in this piece, along with the overarching issue that binds them together, are more important than any of the names embedded in a star on the Hollywood Boulevard. Police Brutality and blatant disregard for human rights on behalf of rogue officers of the law are among some of the serious issues at present and they thought this would be a way to engage the public in this conversation. The hustle and bustle of Hollywood Boulevard at night is surely something to see, but these guys I’m sure have stories to tell on what went down as this was getting done.”
Apparently, though they wouldn’t get int too many specifics, Indecline says their next target is none other than Donald J. Trump. This should be good…
