Roscoe’s Chicken And Waffles Facing Bankruptcy
An LA landmark and cultural fixture may be closing its doors soon if conditions don’t change. The parent company in control of Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles, famous for being name-dropped and patronized by countless hip-hop artists and Black entertainers, just filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Via CNBC:
The parent company of Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles, hit with a $1.6 million judgment in a racial discrimination case, has filed for bankruptcy protection.
East Coast Foods said Tuesday the company does not plan to close any locations, including the seven Roscoe’s in Los Angeles.
Former employee Daniel Beasley, who won the racial discrimination and wrongful termination case against the company, is listed as a creditor in last week’s bankruptcy court filing. Beasley, who is black, complained that Latino workers got better hours and that the kitchen staff routinely used racial epithets. The company denied his allegations but a jury in September decided in Beasley’s favor.
His unsecured claim is listed as more than $3.2 million in the filing.
