Study Links High Folic Acid Levels In Moms To Autism In Kids

For years, women of childbearing age and expectant moms have been advised to take 400 micrograms of folic acid to prevent birth defects such as spina bifida. However, the results of a recent study has physicians second guessing this recommendation. According to Salon, extremely high levels of the vitamin found in the bloodstreams of new moms at the time of birth have been linked to an increased risk of the child developing autism. This, of course, directly contradicts previous research, which suggests that adequate amounts of folic acid at the time of conception significantly reduces the risk of a child developing autism. Some medical experts have taken issue with the study, noting that its findings are based on a small number of families— 1,391, to be exact—being treated at only one hospital, which was Boston University…
