Sir-Mix-a-Lot Speaks Out On Blake Lively’s Instagram Caption Controversy

We recently reported that actress Blake Lively was still slaying red carpets throughout her latest pregnancy with husband Ryan Reynolds. But a recent post of her prego-style has gotten some social media users calling her a racist and cultural appropriator.

The star decided to post up some of the extra curvature that her most recent gut full has given her — with a cheeky caption:

As most people born before 1995 know, those are lyrics to Sir Mix-A-Lot’s classic ode to booty, “Baby Got Back.” Seems harmless enough, but nothing in the world of the internet is ever what it seems.

Some social media users called Blake out for using the black female form as a punchline, or cultural appropriation of hip-hop slang when she knows nothing of Oakland:

So, what does Sir-Mix-a-Lot think of all the controversy? According to Sentinel Land Enterprise:

“If what Blake Lively meant by that comment was, ‘Oh my goodness, I’ve gained weight, I look horrible’ — and I doubt that she did — then I’m with the critics,” he said, “But no one in the world is gonna tell me that a woman that wears that dress is thinking that she’s fat. It sounds like to me like she was giving the line props.”

Just for the record, she didn’t look anywhere close to horrible.

“I think we have to be careful what we wish for as African Americans, because if you say she doesn’t have the right to say that, then how do you expect her at the same time to embrace your beauty?” said Mix-a-Lot. “I think it’s almost a nod of approval, and that was what I wanted. I wanted our idea of beautiful to be accepted.”
