North Carolina School District Wants To Ban Skinny Jeans To End Fat Shaming

We’re very aware how sensitive society has become to the issue of bullying and shaming, but this story in the NYDailyNews probably isn’t the best way combat the behavior…

A North Carolina school district is considering banning a teenage wardrobe staple: skinny jeans.

Wilmington area students, parents and at least one school board member are furious with New Hanover County School System’s proposed new dress code, which forbids leggings, skinny jeans and “any other excessively tight fitting pants.”

There is one caveat: Under the proposed rules, students could still wear their beloved slim-cut denim if a top or dress covers “the posterior in its entirety.”

The district came up with the revised code — developed after some “bigger girls” were being bullied because of their tight jeans, School Board Vice Chairwoman Jeannette Nichols — earlier this month, and invited students to weigh in on social media.

Soooo, it’s the skinny jeans fault that these “bigger girls” get bullied?

Chris Furner, a parent of a first-grade student at Parsley Elementary School, told the StarNews of Wilmington that although parents are concerned about the issue of bullying, changing the dress code might not be the best way to address the situation.

“From my perspective, telling people that they can’t wear something because they are being bullied takes away the choice from them,” he said. “They could have the choice to change their clothes if that is the case.”

Parents aren’t feelin’ it and the kids DEFINITELY aren’t feelin’ it.

“What am I supposed to wear to school??? Curtains???” one student tweeted at the district.

Many pointed out that most jeans made for teens are skinny. Some popular juniors’ stores only stock tight pants.

“Go to a mall and find 10 pairs of jeans that fit what you’re looking for? I bet you can’t,” one student wrote.

Yeah, bullying is bad. We get it. But is banning a particular article of clothing REALLY gonna stop kids from making fun of fa-…bigger girls?
