People love to joke that marriage will drive you to drink, but according to Medical Express, a recent study conducted by researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University and Lund University in Sweden seems to suggest the exact opposite. The study, which was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, discovered a link between marriage and a reduced risk of alcohol abuse. “With this study, we were trying to determine if marriage influences individuals’ future risks for alcohol use disorders,” said Kenneth S. Kendler, M.D., an author of the study and professor of psychiatry and human and molecular genetics in the Department of Psychiatry at the VCU School of Medicine. “The answer is yes, and actually quite profoundly.” Researchers poured over the medical and pharmaceutical records of more than 3 million Swedes and found that a first marriage reduces the risk of alcoholism in men by 59 percent and in women by 73 percent…
