Recipe For Racism: Black-Owned Oregon Bakery Under Fire For Nicknaming Oreo Cupcake “Mr. President”

Oregon Bakery Slammed For Using Offensive Obama-Inspired Name For Cupcake

These folks must be voting for Donald Trump

Fat Cupcake shop began slingin’ snacks last month in Portland, Oregon and upon opening their doors, they were immediately hit with a wave of negative reviews online. Specifically for a dubiously named cupcake called Mr. President according to OregonLive.

Why would that be a problem? Well, the cupcake is described as:

“Oreo (™) Cookie baked inside white cake, cookies n’ cream buttercream.”

Yeah. Now one might argue that maybe, just maybe, the owners of this shop aren’t familiar with how the term “Oreo” is sometimes used in the black community to describe a black person who “acts” white.

Thing is, Fat Cupcake is owned by black folks. They should know better.

One angry online reviewer had this to say:

“Very troubling. They were serving a cupcake called the ‘Mr. President’ that had an Oreo cookie inside. When I tried to point out the racism implied, they claimed that ‘our current president loves Oreos.'”

Owner Anjelica Hayes defends the name with this explanation:

“What sounds like it would be really fancy?” she said. “We thought of the presidential office.”

“I just thought it was an honorary name,” she said. “I thought I’d be honored if someone named a cupcake after me.”

She said that at one point someone told her that President Barack Obama’s favorite cookie was the Oreo. “So we thought that was a cool coincidence,” she said.

We’re all for the support of black-owned business and cupcakes, but this is just in poor taste. Pun intended.
