Madea vs. Birth Of A Nation
There’s been a lot of discussion about Birth Of A Nation and its performance at the box office. The movie made $7 million. However Tyler Perry’s latest Madea movie made more than $27 million. Of course this has made people angry as Madea movies are comedy and fluff and BOAN is about slavery and revolt. So are we doomed because of the results?
No. Don’t be silly. Let’s break it down.
1. Birth of a Nation actually performed well compared to other slave movies. It did better than 12 Years A Slave’s opening weekend and was within the $7-$9 million goal set for the movie.
2. Madea has a fan base that’s proven. It’s a safe bet. More screens for the movie and more fans. It’s simple.
3. The Rape Allegations. Birth Of A Nation suffered from the fact the director/star/producer has been connected to a rape trial dating back to 1999. Nate Parker’s trial has caused people to be turned off from the movie and movie rollout.
Now see how the internet is reacting.
