Alpha Kappa Alpha Members Taunted With Racist Messages At American University
Members of the nation’s first black sorority are reeling after a chapter at American University was targeted.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Lambda Zeta chapter members were horrified to see bananas hanging from nooses on their college campus with “AKA” and “Harambe bait” written on them.
This all comes after Taylor Dumpson, an Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority member, was elected the University’s first black female SGA President.
“Racially charged acts of bigotry are done to instill fear and inflict pain in our community—especially at stressful times, such as at the end of the term,” said University President Dr. Neil Kerwin in a statement on Monday night. “I regret this happened, apologize to everyone offended, and state emphatically that this incident does not reflect what American University truly is.”
Dumpson has also released a statement and the #AUSupportsAKA hashtag has been started.
“Being first isn’t easy,” wrote Dumpson in her first letter to the campus. ” As the first black woman AUSG president, I implore all of us to unite in solidarity with those impacted by this situation and we must remember that ‘if there is no struggle, there is no progress,’ ─ Frederick Douglass,” Dumpson said. “We must use this time to reflect on what we value as a community and we must show those in the community that bigotry, hate, and racism cannot and will not be tolerated.”
People are such cowards, we hope University officials find and punish these blatant racists.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s International President has released a statement on the incident condemning the perpetrators.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. President Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson is encouraging law enforcement to investigate.
“We look forward to working with American University leadership to discuss opportunities to ensure that the University is a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, faculty and campus visitors.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will not tolerate unwarranted attacks on our members or any member of our community, physical, verbal or otherwise, which interfere with their pursuit of higher education or their basic human rights.
We will continue to work with the sponsoring graduate chapter, the parents/guardians of our American University members, and the university to provide support and safe passage to and from class and other university and sorority activities through the remainder of the school year.”
