Radio One Changes Name To Urban One

The largest multimedia company targeting Black Americans recently announced some exciting news. Executives Yashima White AziLove (U1 Corporate), D’Angela Proctor (TV One), Jay Stevens (Radio One and Reach Media), Kierna Mayo (iONE Digital), Tuwisha Rogers (One Solution and OneX Studios), Dwayne Whitaker (R1 Digital), Kim Bandell (One VIP) and Marve Frazier (BHM Digital) converged on a press conference call Thursday, May 11 with news that Radio One, Inc. would now be known as Urban One, Inc.

The change was made official on May 5, commemorating the 18th anniversary of its IPO, when the company went public.

The name change is reflecting the company’s longstanding, rich history as the most trusted source to inform, entertain and inspire the African-American community with a promise that Urban One will continue to provide culturally relevant integrated content through its iconic brands and platforms.

According to Urban One Vice President of Corporate Communications Yashima White AziLove, per Radio One’s President and Chief Executive Officer Alfred Liggins, the Urban One name accentuates the company’s dedication to black culture.

“Well for clarity, Radio One is a legacy name, and one in which we have not departed from. Radio One refers to our vast local radio network of 57 broadcast stations in 15 markets,” said AziLove.

“Our CEO chose the word “urban” in short due to its inherit ability to encompass all things black. Mr. Liggins often says we’re in the black people business and we believe that black culture is sexy, it’s hot, it’s appealing and we know that black culture impacts every aspect of American life.”

In addition to the name change, Urban One’s iONE Digital has announced the acquisition of,, and under the moniker “BHM Digital” alongside existing brand properties, HelloBeautiful, NewsOne, GlobalGrind and the company’s new site and master brand, Cassius (

“The brands we are acquiring have great recognition amongst consumers, clients and agency partners,” said Detavio Samuels, President of iONE Digital & One Solution.

“In fact, the Bossip voice is so admired that some of its competitors have dubbed it ‘the best of the internet’ and there are already plans to extend it outside of the digital world.
