Birmingham Mom And Daughter Want Answers To Racist Middle School Bullying
One Birmingham, Michigan mother is FED UP with racist bullying at her daughter’s school and wants someone in charge to finally do something about. Maia Nelson reached out to 7 Action News with her story, in hopes that at least one of the kids is expelled.
She tells the local news station that she’s emotionally drained from hearing about racist remarks directed at her young daughter and other children of color in the Birmingham, Alabama (go figure) school district.
Recently, a picture of a white student on Snapchat with a bag over his head and KKK written on it went viral. The child in the snap is a student at Berkshire Middle School.
Maia is demanding something be done to the kid. So far there have been no repercussions. Her daughter, Morgan, 12, who attends the same school, suggests expulsion.
“I want something done,” she says. “I want someone to be expelled I want an example made.”
This incident is sadly just one that was recorded. According to the report, Morgan and Maia state that black children are repeatedly called the “n-word” and makes racist jokes that :tear her apart.”
After the report went up, this is what the school’s Superintendent had to say about it.
We just learned about this situation this afternoon from your reporter. The principal and central administrators were not aware of the events until this afternoon and we have begun an immediate investigation. We were very saddened to hear about this incident and want to be clear that this type of behavior, if confirmed through our investigation, is not acceptable. Our district remains very committed to teaching our students about good and just ways to be respectful and caring.
