Stars Turn Up To Support Famed Harlem Venue
Singers Sheila E and Charlie Wilson had the crowd on their feet this week at the Apollo Theater’s annual Spring Gala.
Prince’s protege, along with The Gap Band alum, were among the performers at the June 12 event at the legendary theater in Harlem.
With her drumsticks in hand, Sheila E rocked the crowd with her hit, “Glamorous Life,” while Wilson – who Snoop Dogg dubbed “Uncle Charlie” – closed the awards show with energetic versions of his hits, “You Dropped A Bomb On Me,” “Yearning For Your Love,” and “Outstanding.”
Host Cedric The Entertainer joked that he had his own older folks version of Future’s recent hit, “Mask Off:” “CVS, Walgreens, CVS!” he joked. “Sleeping mask off!”
Also honored were TV and film director Stan Lathan, and Verizon.
CeeLo Green, “The Voice” contestant We McDonald and Trombone Shorty rounded out the line up, and BOSSIP spotted EJ Johnson, Tamron Hall, Leon, Pee Wee Kirkland and Dapper Dan in the glamourous crowd.
The event raised $2.2 million that will find the Apollo’s programs, services and community resources.
Following the awards show, guests joined a Second Line and danced down the block to a lavish after party in a luxe tent on the New York State Office buildings grounds.
