#CharleenaLyles Mother Killed By Police After Calling 911 On Burglars
Only a few details are being reported about this incident right now. We know that officers were called to Charleena’s apartment after she called 911 to report a burglary. The apartment is a site for homeless families in need of transitional housing. Two officers were dispatched to her unit, usually one would go but reportedly because of a previous report attached to this address, they sent two.
Officers on the scene say in reports that at some point, the pregnant mother of four “confronted” them with a knife at her door. The cops began to ring off shots at Charleena, killing her in front of her three children.
“Why couldn’t they have Tased her?” Lyles’s sister, Monika Williams, told the Seattle Times. “They could have taken her down. I could have taken her down.”
“Even if my sister had a knife in her hand, she weighs like nothing, even if she’s soaking wet,” Williams told The Stranger. “There’s no way you could’ve taken a taser and taken her down? There’s no way you could’ve taken a baton and knocked the knife out of her hand?”
Family members tell Seattle Times she was several months pregnant and had been struggling with mental-health issues for the past year. Charleena was reportedly concerned authorities would take her children, one of whom they said has Down syndrome.
