Study Shows Black Girls Are Viewed As More “Adult-Like” Than White Girls
A study released this week is confirming what black women across America already knew–their adolescent bodies were seen as “less innocent” than white girls’.
The study, “Girlhood Interrupted” was released by Georgetown’s Law Center on Poverty and Equality. The study data reveals that adults view Black girls as less innocent and more adult-like than their white peers, especially in the age range of 5–14. OVerall, they found that adults in general view Black girls need less nurturing, see Black girls as needing less protection, Black girls need to be comforted less. Black girls are also generally seen as more independent than white. And, apparently, Black girls know more about sex?
These results are profound because it supports what we know, that Black girls are punished harder in school and in the system for similar offenses, all because adults perceive them as more problematic. Very similar to how Black boys are viewed.\\
