Issa Rae Wants A New Show With Black Teens
Issa Rae is and will continue to be our TV queen. Even after she overreacted about getting her man’s man juice in her eye on ‘Insecure,’ our love for Ms. Rae still stands strong. The shows on television now are becoming more and more diverse, but we’re nowhere near where we should be. Issa has an idea to bridge that gap a little more and bring a show to life that we haven’t seen the likes of.
For the New Yorker, Issa pitches her “television fantasy.” A show about Black teenagers, much like ‘90210’ or ‘Gossip Girl,’ but surrounding a group of Black teens, instead. She hypothesizes that the potential name for the series could be either, “Ladera Heights 90041” or “Potomac Maryland 20854.”
This seems like a no-brainer, especially after the mini-remake of Friends in Jay Z’s “Moonlight” video with Black superstars including Issa Rae, Lakeith Stanfield, and Tiffany Haddish. Like Rae mentions, the TV screen hasn’t really seen a show revolving around Black teens since Moesha, so it’s more than time for another to come on the scene and inspire some young people and make them feel included.
SO WRITE IT UP DEN, ISSA. WE’RE WAITING IMPATIENTLY.
