$1.9 Million Pledged To Burned Louisiana Churches

The three black churches burned in Louisiana as part of a hate crime are gettings some much-needed assistance. After donations poured in for Notre Dame Cathedral following that catastrophic fire, several Americans including Hillary Clinton pointed out that there were churches on our home turf that could use help as well.

As previously reported three historically Black churches were set ablaze within a 10-day span in the Louisiana parish of St. Landry. A sheriff’s deputy’s son, Holden Matthews, was arrested on arson and hate crimes charges.

Now in the wake of the Notre Dame blaze, a GoFundMe campaign seeking donations for the churches went from only around $50,000 to more than $1.9 million. The current number as of today, April 18, 2019 is $1,900,770.

Donors commented that they could give “at least $50 to the churches instead of Notre Dame” and some noted that the churches “shouldn’t get lost” in response to the cathedral fire.

NBC reports that the money is to be distributed equally among the three churches, which were all a century old.

“It gives you a new hope in society,” said Gerald Toussaint, the pastor at one of the churches, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. “It gives you a new hope in people because it shows a lot of people have a good heart.”

Awesome news!
