All the single parents in America will be happy to know that President Obama’s new educational plan for American students could have them ditching summers for longer school years.

President Obama says that American children are at a disadvantage to other children around the globe because they don’t spend as much time in school during the year.  Obama’s new plan is to keep schools open later and on the weekends so that children can have a safe place to go. He states:

“Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas,” the president said earlier this year. “Not with Malia and Sasha, not in my family, and probably not in yours. But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom.”

“Our school calendar is based upon the agrarian economy and not too many of our kids are working the fields today,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a recent interview with The Associated Press.

Obama’s new plan was sparked by his desire to give American children the same opportunities and advantages as students across the world who spend more time in school than American children. While it isn’t widely popular amongst many children, especially his two daughters, Obama says it’s necessary for kids to have the extra time in the classroom to be well equipped for the wave of the new century.

Do we agree America?
