Dr. Jerisa Berry Urges Women To Take Charge Of Their Own Fertility

Actress Gabrielle Union made headlines last week when she revealed she’d endured a heartbreaking eight or nine miscarriages over three years.

The actress’ admission casts a light on the thorny issue of miscarriages – and although Union’s multiple miscarriages are rare, there are ways that women can increase their chances of delivering healthy, full-term babies, according to emergency room physician Dr. Jerisa Berry.

“We’re glad that she shared her story, because a lot of women do suffer in silence,” Dr. Berry told BOSSIP. “Most women don’t feel confident or secure telling other women that they are having trouble becoming a mom.”

Dr. Berry – who has not treated Union – said problems like fibroids, stress, a poor nutrition and age can contribute to the likelihood of losing a baby.

But she is urging women to consider a new way to take control of their reproductive health by getting tested to check their reserve of good eggs. Dr. Berry has also launched her own website and app where women can test to see if their eggs are viable or aging, and then make informed decisions on whether to freeze their eggs or make lifestyle changes.

“When you go through that process (of miscarriage), it’s disappointing,” Dr. Berry said. “But I want to encourage women – having gone through a miscarriage myself – that there is hope.”
