Why Howard University’s Homecoming Can’t Be Missed

Ahh, it’s that time of year again. The leaves are turning, the weather is getting chillier, and alumni from each of the nation’s HBCUs (and folks who are just looking for a good time) are descending on their Alma Maters for fun and fellowship.

This weekend, alum from Howard University return to The Mecca for the most iconic weekend and biggest event of homecoming season – #HUHC.

Peep just a few of the many reasons Howard’s homecoming is TRULY the greatest on earth.

First of all, your fave is probably there.

From Diddy to Drake, 2 Chainz to Rick Ross, anyone who is anyone in Hop Hop and R&B makes sure to grace the stage at the annual Yardfest each year. On top of the famous faces on the stage, you never know who is walking through the crowd in the interest of catching the concert themselves.

That’s not even to mention the long list of famous alumni that trek back each year — Sean “Diddy” Combs, Taraji P. Henson, Marlon Wayans, Anthony Anderson, Lance Gross, LaLa Anthony, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Chadwick Boseman, Phylicia Rashad, Debbie Allen, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Laz Alonso, etc. etc. etc…

The turn up is REAL.

Besides churning out the most Black PhDs in the nation and graduating some of the most successful and influential Black professionals in just about every industry…if there’s one other thing Howard knows how to do, it’s PARTY.

From the open bar Old Howard Gala, to the open bar 1000 Bottles party, to HU club nights boasting appearances from Cardi B, 21 Savage, and 50 Cent…and that’s on top of the all-Saturday-long tailgate and the multiple happy hours and private parties. Bison minor in turnup alongside their chosen degree program, so the alumni DEFINITELY know how to celebrate.

If you’re going to go, pop a B12 and rest up before you get there. Hopefully, your liver can handle it.

The style is sickening.

Make no mistake…if you’re stepping onto the Yard for the concert or Divine 9 festivities, heading over to Greene stadium for the game (or just tailgating your way through it over on Georgia Ave), and DEFINITELY if you’re stopping through any of the numerous galas and parties over the weekend…you’ll need a fly azz outfit.

Howard’s students have been nationally recognized as some of the most stylish in the nation (Google it!) — ain’t no pajama pants and crocs on the way to class over here. This definitely spills over into the alumni population, who KNOW to show out when back at the Mecca. Plus, you never know who you’ll run into, as Black excellence from all over music, film/tv, social media, and general “It Girls/Guys” are always in the mix at every event. Put that best foot forward…

If you’re Greek…you pretty much have to make it there at some point.

Howard’s campus is the birthplace of a good chunk of the Pan-Hellenic organizations. So whether you’re an AKA or a Delta, a Que or a Sigma…this is home base. There are markers and meeting spots all over the Yard and the valley dedicated to these organizations, and generations of sorors and frat brothers congregate to rally and show their pride all weekend long.

Not to mention the Howard Homecoming step show. If you’ve never been…you NEED to go at least once.

Beautiful Black Excellence

All the superficial isht aside, Howard’s Homecoming is one of the biggest most beautiful displays of black unity, camaraderie, friendship, and family you’ll ever have the privilege of being a part of. Everywhere you look there are old friends reuniting, families with multi-generational alumni coming together, and couples who met on campus flashing new engagement rings and fresh babies that may never have been possible if not for The Mecca bringing them together.

Have you made it to Howard Homecoming yet??
