Slane showed the jury a close-up photo of the victim’s private parts, saying the picture corroborated the medical records of the girl’s vaginal injuries. But Jelani’s lawyer David Schwartz said the injury could have been caused by masturbating or sex with “a third contributor to the DNA.”
Schwartz doubled down on the defense’s claim that Robinson used threats of abuse to brainwash her two children into lying about Jelani.
He poked holes in the girl’s brother’s testimony and said the boy- who testified he’d walked in on the abuse – was coached. He said that Robinson had the means to plant Jelani’s semen or it could have gotten there because they lived in the same house and his DNA “was all over the place.”
Jelani’s lawyer reminded jurors that the girl testified that she was happy and excited at her mother and Jelani’s wedding despite allegedly enduring Jelani’s abuse at the same time.
“She knew her mother was going to marry him and never tried to stop her,” Schwartz said. “She knows she’s going to be stuck with Jelani. Does that make any sense?”
Schwartz also questioned why Robinson still texted back and forth with Jelani’s mother Carol after cops arrested him.
“What mother would have that conversation and not tell Carol Maraj, ‘Go to hell! I’m gonna f**king kill your son!’” Schwartz said, his voice raised.
Deliberations are set to begin later this week. If convicted, Jelani faces up to life in state prison.
