Gabrielle Union Talks Natural Hair In Hollywood
In a recent interview with Byrdie, Gabrielle Union talks about the different struggles she’s had throughout her time in Hollywood, all due to sometimes sporting her natural hair.
Union told the site, “There’s a larger conversation with people of color when it comes to our hair and our skin color. People will try to lighten our skin tones and alter our hair, which says a lot of about how we feel about ourselves versus how other people feel about our blackness and textured hair. We need to showcase the fullness of our beauty.”
She also discusses the recent situations with both Solange and Lupita Nyong’o who had their natural hair photoshopped on the covers of two separate magazines. When asked if she’s ever been in a situation where she was edited in a similar way, she could definitely relate. Gabrielle said, “My skin has been lightened in a sense of the camera making me look over-exposed. And at the time, I was like, I look weird, you know what I mean? It’s one of those things that I noticed and my family noticed, but nobody else noticed.”
Union also talks about a time when she was acting in a role as a professional woman, and the producers were completely against her wearing braids for the role, because they didn’t think that they were sophisticated or professional. She wants everyone to get rid of the Eurocentric beauty standards in their minds and realize that more than stick straight hair can be beautiful, sophisticated, professional, and everything else under the sun.
