Someone We Actually Like: LL Cool J Becomes First Rapper To Earn Kennedy Center Honor

Everybody loves Cool James, right?

LL Cool J Receives Kennedy Center Honor Alongside Gloria Estefan & Lionel Richie

LL Cool J is getting at least part of his just due. The pioneering rapper was honored at the Kennedy Center Honors Sunday alongside dancer Carmen de Lavallade, Gloria Estefan, writer/producer Norman Lear, and Lionel Richie.

LL’s award marks the first time a rapper has received the honor, and he clearly couldn’t be more excited.

He also brought his entire family out for the ceremony.

Luckily for this year’s Kennedy Center Honorees, Cheeto In Chief announced in August that he wouldn’t be in attendance. Trump’s absence marked the fourth time in four decades that the sitting president hasn’t been present.

The award recognizes artists with a lifetime of contributions to American culture and past recipients include Oprah, Cicely Tyson and George Lucas.

Congrats LL!

He’s also been nominated for the 2018 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, let’s hope he FINALLY makes it in.
